Riverbanks Zoo and Garden Helps U.S. Marine Plan Special Christmas Gift for His Family

Unique Gift Allows Family to Interact Online and Share a Special Moment Together.

COLUMBIA, S.C., Dec. 23 -- When Sergeant Ben Barron, a U.S. Marine currently stationed in Iraq, realized he would miss his daughter Alice's first Christmas, he contacted Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia, S.C. to request a unique Christmas gift for his family so that he could create a memorable holiday experience and help bridge the distance between them all.

RIVERBANKS ZOO AND GARDEN

Remembering his wife Elizabeth's fondness for penguins, Sgt. Barron contacted Riverbanks to see if the zoo's staff would allow his wife and daughter a special opportunity this Christmas to meet and interact one-on-one with the penguins living at the Zoo.

Upon receiving the message from Sgt. Barron, the staff at Riverbanks immediately went to work, and Elizabeth and Alice soon received a surprise package from Sgt. Barron inviting them to spend Friday, Dec. 22 at Riverbanks. The surprise package included an invitation to attend a behind-the-scenes tour of the penguin exhibit, and a surprise for Sgt. Barron - the opportunity to watch his family interact with the penguins through webcam.

Located in Columbia, S.C., Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is home to more than 2,000 magnificent and fascinating animals and one of the America's most beautiful and inspiring botanical gardens. The lush, 170-acre site features dynamic natural exhibits, scenic river views, spectacular valley overlooks and significant historical landmarks.
