FAIRFAX, Va., March 10 -- "If you hear somebody worrying about the future of young African Americans," said Former President William J. Clinton tonight, "tell them to help someone go to college." Clinton's remarks were given as he accepted the United Negro College Fund's (UNCF) highest honor, the Frederick D. Patterson Award, on behalf of himself and President George H. W. Bush for their philanthropic efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The former presidents were presented with the award during UNCF's 63rd anniversary dinner, during which President Clinton delivered the acceptance speech. Since he was unable to attend the event, President Bush accepted his award via a pre-recorded video.
As the nation's oldest and most successful minority higher education assistance organization, the United Negro College Fund's mission is to provide financial support to its 39 member institutions and increase minority degree attainment by reducing financial barriers to college. UNCF institutions and other historically black colleges and universities are highly effective, awarding 25 percent of African American baccalaureate degrees. |GlobalGiants.com|
