With cumulative U.S. sales passing 35,000, Nissan LEAF brought owners throughout the United States together to share their experiences during National Plug In Day on Sept. 28 and 29.

Nissan — a global leader in electric vehicle sales — is the first automaker to serve as a presenting sponsor of National Plug In Day.

Nissan LEAF sales in the United States are up 317 percent year-over-year since launching the 2013 model in March. Similarly, National Plug In Day has expanded to more than 80 events in cities across the United States and in several other countries. Thousands of EV advocates took part in a variety of activities like EV parades, tailgates, ride-and-drives, live music and games.

National Plug In Day, organized by Plug In America, Sierra Club and the Electric Auto Association, is a nationwide celebration created to heighten awareness of and highlight the benefits of plug-in vehicles, such as Nissan LEAF.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., Japan’s second-largest automotive company, is headquartered in Yokohama, Japan, and is part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance. In 2010, Nissan introduced the all-electric Nissan LEAF, and continues to lead in zero-emission mobility. The LEAF, the first mass-market, pure-electric vehicle launched globally, is now one of the best-selling EV’s.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in celebration of the restoration of 19 Satyajit Ray films by the Academy Film Archive, is presenting new prints of the prolific filmmaker’s renowned early works. [The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is the world’s preeminent movie-related organization and is known around the world for its annual Academy Awards, now officially known as The Oscars.]

The two-evening screening series kicked off with a double feature of 1955’s “Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road)” and 1956’s “Aparajito (The Unvanquished)” on Friday, September 6 and concluded with 1959’s “Apur Sansar (The World of Apu)” on Monday, September 9 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California.

Special guests for Monday’s program included actress Sharmila Tagore, who made her film debut in “Apur Sansar,” and Dilip Basu, founding director of the Satyajit Ray Film and Study Center Collection at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

The Academy has also partnered with the British Film Institute (BFI), the American Cinematheque and the Austrian Film Museum to screen prints from the Academy Film Archive’s collection.

In London, the BFI Southbank is presenting “Satyajit Ray” from August 14 through October 5.

In Los Angeles, the American Cinematheque at the Aero Theatre, in partnership with the Academy, is presenting “Unlocking the Golden Fortress: Satyajit Ray Restored,” from September 12 through October 21, featuring all 19 of the Ray films that the Academy Film Archive has restored to date.

In Vienna, the Austrian Film Museum will present “Satyajit Ray: Early Works” from December 4 through January 8, 2014.

More than 100 screenings will take place between the Academy’s screenings and its partners’ during the months-long celebration.

Satyajit Ray was an Indian filmmaker, regarded as one of the greatest directors of world cinema.

In 1992, after a career spanning more than three decades, Ray received an Honorary Award (an Oscar statuette) from the Academy “in recognition of his rare mastery of the art of motion pictures, and of his profound humanitarian outlook, which has had an indelible influence on filmmakers and audiences throughout the world.”

IBM Customer Experience Lab Unveils New Innovations for Chief Marketing Officers

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. and BANGALORE, India: IBM today unveiled a set of new innovations from its Customer Experience Lab, dedicated to helping business leaders gain deeper insights into individual customers and transform the way customers experience their products, services and brands through the use of mobile, social, cloud and advanced analytics technologies.

Since the Lab’s launch in March 2013, IBM Research scientists and business consultants have worked together with more than 100 clients from across the world to co-create a variety of new technologies and services to transform the front office, revolutionizing how companies interact and engage with customers. In this new age of the digital customer, organizations are reassessing how to drive brand loyalty and accelerate business growth by moving away from addressing their customers as mass audiences toward cultivating and creating new value from personalized customer relationships.

To help address these challenges, the IBM Customer Experience Lab team in India has introduced three new technologies, each focused on driving innovation in social, mobile as well as Big Data and analytics technologies to help organizations capture and act on deeper customer insights. These technologies build on the work the team has completed around the Watson Engagement Advisor.

IBM Edge Analytics connects people with contextual information. Once a user has opted in for the service, the tool cross-references the user’s location with the user’s activity to provide useful insights. As users conduct daily transactions, such as buying airline tickets or shopping at the mall, the system sends relevant promotions by email and mobile alerts, per the user’s preferences. An early adopter of the technology, IndusInd Bank in India, has embedded IBM Edge Analytics within its customer channels, such as Internet Banking, ATM, SMS Alerts, Phone Banking and Branch Offices. In addition to helping the bank better understand its own customers, the technology is helping it reach non-customers.

Vibes is an enterprise software solution to help CMOs target consumers and communities that care about and participate in their industry. Individuals are identified by analyzing their interaction on social networks, and then cross-referenced with their purchase history with the company, or information about their interests based on other social networking activity. For example, a retailer can research past purchases of its Facebook fans to better determine what special offers to make to them. Several leading telecommunications providers in India are currently piloting Vibes to identify the right set of candidates for promoting specific products to increase penetration.

Social Media Event Tracker Tool (SMETT) leverages natural language processing, text mining technology and advanced analytics to comb through millions of public social network messages to derive meaningful insights. The tool was used recently by ABS CBN, a television news network in the Philippines, to analyze Twitter chatter in both English and the local language (Tagalog) about candidates in the country’s recent mid-term Senatorial elections. ABS CBN used the analysis, which filtered to them in near real-time, to generate new articles for their website as part of their election coverage. Retailers are also turning to SMETT to find out what people think about their products. The tool’s ability to quickly derive insight about numerous related topics in any language could help a retailer find out why a product is popular or improve its online customer service.

“Customers across the world are using innumerable channels - from social networks to online product review sites - to express their individual experience with products and services. This is fueling an explosion of data and driving a radical shift in how companies must engage with their customers to thrive and stay competitive,” said Ramesh Gopinath, Director, IBM Research - India. “The innovations we are developing with clients in the Customer Experience Lab are enabling companies to transform their front office with speed and at scale, reshaping strategy, operations and offerings to attract, retain and exceed the expectations of an increasingly powerful customer.”

The IBM Customer Experience Lab is headquartered at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., supported by researchers at IBM’s 12 global labs including Africa, Brazil, California, China, India, Israel, Japan, Switzerland, and Texas. The Lab brings together skills across disciplines including service science, industries research, mathematics and business optimization, social, mobile, Smarter Commerce, data mining, cloud computing, security and privacy, cognitive computing and systems management.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2014 Gets Impressive Fuel Economy Rating in the USA

The newest Mercedes-Benz E-Class (the 2014 E250 BlueTEC sedan) has achieved an impressive estimated EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) rating of 45 miles per gallon on the highway and 28 mpg around town.

According to Mercedes-Benz USA, the E250 BlueTEC is powered by high-efficiency turbodiesel engine. The all-aluminum, in-line four-cylinder engine makes use of four valves per cylinder and dual overhead camshafts with vane-type variable valve timing, producing 195 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

To ensure the E250 BlueTEC meets exhaust emission regulations in all 50 U.S. states, the BlueTEC system uses AdBlue injection to make the diesel as clean as a state-of-the-art gasoline engine.

As modern all-wheel-drive systems become more refined, they are becoming increasingly popular, especially in the luxury car market. With negligible weight and fuel-efficiency tradeoffs, full-time four-wheel drive provides year-round traction and stability benefits on both wet and dry roads. According to Mercedes-Benz, optional on the E250 BlueTEC, the latest Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC Four-Wheel Drive system can be cleanly integrated into the 7-speed automatic transmission so it fits right into the standard body and utilizes the existing front suspension.

Further, according to the company, it focuses on real-world safety with the goal of accident-free driving, and the new E-Class offers more than 30 standard and optional active and passive safety systems under the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive comfort and safety portfolio. The Driver Assistance Package offers the following content:

DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist: radar-based cruise control system with semi-autonomous steering inputs that can work from 0-124 mph depending on road conditions.

PRE-SAFE Brake with pedestrian detection: radar and stereo cameras detect vehicles and pedestrians in front of the vehicle and can adjust braking according to the situation, and apply full brakes if necessary.

PRE-SAFE PLUS: rear-facing radar that senses possible rear collisions and prepares the vehicle to help reduce the injury risk for the passengers in a rear-end collision.

BAS PLUS with Cross Traffic Assist: reads cross-traffic encounters with stereo cameras and adds appropriate brake assistance.

Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Protection: assists by corrective one-sided braking.
