International Press Institute (IPI) announces its 2019 World Congress in Geneva, Switzerland, in partnership with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU)

Vienna, Austria, November 18, 2018 — The International Press Institute (IPI), the global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists, has announced that it will hold its 68th World Congress and General Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland from June 4 to 6, 2019 in partnership with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
The World Congress is IPI’s flagship event and a top international forum for issues related to media freedom and quality journalism, gathering more than 300 leading media professionals each year.
“I am delighted that IPI’s 2019 World Congress will take place in Switzerland”, IPI Executive Board Chair Markus Spillmann, a prominent Swiss media expert and former editor-in-chief of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, said.
“The IPI World Congress allows editors, publishers, and journalists with a shared dedication to quality journalism to exchange experiences and discuss common challenges in bringing news to the public. As global political trends continue to cast a shadow over our profession, the opportunity for journalists with shared values to unite is more valuable than ever,” he added.
“It is a particular pleasure for IPI to partner with the EBU at a time in which the fight for active and independent public service broadcasters is essential to preserving democratic, informed societies,” Spillmann stated.
“Journalism has never been more critical to society and democracy. That is why it is so important that we come together as an industry to reflect on our place in the world and learn from each other’s experiences”, EBU Director General Noel Curran said.
“The IPI World Congress is a chance for all media - both public service and commercial - to come together to seek common ground and reinforce the critical role of high-quality, independent journalism and we are delighted to support it,” the EBU Director-General added.
Based in Geneva, the EBU is the world’s leading alliance of public service media. The EBU boasts member organizations in 56 countries in Europe, and an additional 34 Associates in Asia, Africa, Australasia, and the Americas. Its members operate over 2,000 television, radio and online channels and services, reaching an audience of more than 160 billion people around the world in 160 languages.
In 1950, in the aftermath of the Second World War, 34 editors from 15 countries founded the IPI on the belief that a free press will contribute to a better world. Today, with members in nearly 100 countries, IPI brings together media representatives from digital, print and broadcast outlets to address press freedom challenges and to promote independent journalism as a core pillar of democracy.
The International Press Institute (IPI) has been organizing its World Congresses in different cities and countries such as Hamburg, Germany; Yangon, Myanmar; and Cape Town, South Africa. In addition to top editors and journalists, prominent past speakers at IPI Congresses included Nobel Prize Laureates and Heads of States and Governments.
Meanwhile, IPI has warned several third world Governments, including those of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, against any unsolicited, unethical, abusive, sharp-tongued, insensitive, or criminal conduct towards the media persons.
It has called upon “all governments and their official authorities, as well as executive organs, to accord ‘Members of the IPI’ full protection, assistance, and support in pursuance of their professional duties.”

India's Central Road Research Institute organizes an international conference on pavement technology and road infrastructure engineering

New Delhi — India’s Central Road Research Institute organized a two-day international conference titled “Pavements and Computational Approaches” from 16-17 November 2018, at its premises in New Delhi. The objective of the meeting was to deliberate upon advancements in pavement technology and road infrastructure engineering across the world, with particular emphasis to the requirements of developing countries. Experts discussed issues related to the design and construction of pavements, material characterization, computational analysis, and modeling. Deliberations during the conference brought out new thoughts on technology up-gradation and its successful implementation in the field.
Nitin Gadkari, India’s Minister of Road Transport & Highways, said that the mission of the Road Transport & highways Ministry is to build high-quality roads at low costs. He called upon the experts at the conference to be ready to experiment with innovative technology, make all possible use of indigenous raw material including waste material, and promote the pre-cast technology. He said the thrust of technological innovation should be on reducing costs and time for completion of projects without any compromise on quality.
The crumbling infrastructure, road congestion, growth in heavy vehicle traffic, and insufficient maintenance have rendered the road transport inefficient in developing countries. Significant challenges to the road network require a clear focus on enhanced pavement design, construction, performance evaluation, management and preservation for developing long-lasting, low-maintenance pavements.
Nearly 250 delegates including researchers, entrepreneurs, academicians and field engineers attended the conference.
