Paris, France, 2 February 2020 — The international Summit ChangeNOW was held under the emblematic glass dome of the Grand Palais in Paris from 30 January to 1 February 2020. It gathered hundreds of urban actors and solution-makers from around the world. They all shared their experiences and responses to shape a better urban future for the Planet.
During the Summit, there was a panel “UNESCO cities: innovative hubs for local sustainable development” held on 31 January. In that discussion, UNESCO presented its UNESCO Cities Platform (UCP), which comprises eight programs and networks of cities across the areas of education, the sciences, culture and communication, and information. Commenting on UCP, Denise Bax of UNESCO Culture Sector said that the Platform strengthens synergies through a shared vision and actions among the Organization’s cities programs and networks.
UNESCO representatives illustrated innovative urban practices to highlight the Organization’s transversal work on and with cities. They explained how the UNESCO Cities Platform (UCP) works for cultural heritage, lifelong learning, natural resources management, creativity, technologies, and social inclusion.
UNESCO representatives shared concrete experiences from partner cities. That included the rehabilitation of the river in Manila (Philippines), the urban flood management in Bangalore (India), innovative educational programs in Hamburg (Germany), participatory platforms for social change in York (United Kingdom), and the linkages between heritage and urban regeneration in Fez (Morocco).
The special guest of the panel, Ms. Lucienne Redercher, Vice-Mayor of Nancy (France) and Vice-President of the European Coalition of Inclusive and Sustainable Cities (ECCAR), emphasized the need to re-humanize cities, by reconnecting them with the people who live there. “We need to unite before acting and think together to build the future,” she articulated during her intervention on the initiatives for social inclusion implemented in Nancy.
In line with the UN Agenda 2030, ChangeNOW 2020 focuses on eight action areas to tackle the world’s urgent environmental and social needs. It addresses issues such as clean air and clean water, health and food security, sustainable and accessible energy, biodiversity, sustainable consumption and production, global citizenship education, and well-being.
ChangeNOW 2020 provided a significant opportunity for cities, partners, and stakeholders to discuss and raise awareness of the most pressing urban challenges. The forum advocated a people-centered and place-based urban development approach equipped with innovative urban solutions from around the world.

Gates is a professor at the University of Chicago in the Department of Visual Arts and the Harris School of Public Policy and is Distinguished Visiting Artist and Director of Artist Initiatives at the Lunder Institute for American Art at Colby College.
“Special thanks to the World Economic Forum for this most prized Crystal Award. The impact of the arts and artists is incomparable when we think about the transformation of cities and towns. Geneva, Switzerland, 14 January 2020 - The World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2020, taking place on 21-24 January in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, will focus on establishing stakeholder capitalism as a way of addressing the world’s most significant challenges. These challenges include societal divisions created by income inequality and political polarization to the climate crisis we face today.
Underpinning the meeting will be the Davos Manifesto 2020. This document builds on the original Davos Manifesto of 1973, which set out for the first time the stakeholder concept that businesses should serve the interests of all society rather than merely their shareholders. The Davos Manifesto 2020 provides a vision for stakeholder capitalism that touches on a range of essential issues of our time, including fair taxation, zero tolerance for corruption, executive pay, and respect for human rights.
“Business has now to fully embrace stakeholder capitalism, which means not only maximizing profits but use their capabilities and resources in cooperation with governments and civil society to address the critical issues of this decade. They have to contribute to a more cohesive and sustainable world actively,” said Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum.
Building on the Manifesto 2020, this year’s program focuses on achieving maximum impact on the Forum’s platform for public-private cooperation across six core areas of activity: Ecology, Economy, Society, Industry, Technology, and Geopolitics. More than 160 individual initiatives, each capable of delivering system-wide transformation, are active on the Forum platform. Significant advances in a number of these, especially in the fields of responsible business, the environment, and social mobility, are expected to be confirmed during the meeting.
Among the initiatives to be launched at the Annual Meeting is one that aims to plant 1 trillion trees over the next decade and to equip 1 billion people with the necessary skills in the age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Nearly 3,000 leaders will participate in this year’s Annual Meeting. Top political leaders taking part include:

New Delhi, January 02, 2020 — There is a well-established system for selection of tableaux for participation in the India Republic Day Parade as per which Ministry of Defence invites proposals for the scenes from all States/UTs and Central Ministries/Departments.
An Expert Committee of the Ministry of Defence comprising of eminent persons in the field of art, culture, painting, sculpture, music, architecture, and choreography evaluates the tableaux proposals of various States/UTs and Central Ministries/Departments. The Expert Committee examines each tableau for its theme, concept, design, and visual impact before making its recommendations. The committee shortlists the best scenes for the ceremony.
This year, the Expert Committee received a total of 56 tableaux proposals. Out of these, it has finally shortlisted 22 designs, comprising of 16 States/UTs and 6 Ministries/Departments, for participation in the Republic Day Parade 2020.
• The Chandigarh Administration had proposed themes including Gardens of Chandigarh, Burail Jail, and Sukhna Lake to the Expert Committee for its Republic Day Tableau. The committee rebuffed Chandigarh’s proposition.
The tableau of the Indian Navy, to be showcased at the Republic Day Parade on January 26, 2020, at Rajpath is in pursuance of the Navy Week theme ‘Indian Navy - Silent, Strong, and Swift.’
The forward part of the tableau showcases the might and firepower of Navy in all three dimensions viz surface, sub-surface, and air. The scene portrays models of state-of-the-art assets like Boeing P8I Long Range Maritime Patrol aircraft with Harpoon missiles, Kolkata class Stealth Destroyer displaying a Brahmos launch, and Kalvari Class Submarine launching the Exocet missile.
On the trailer, the tableau showcases the indigenous aircraft carrier Vikrant under construction at Cochin Shipyard Limited, along with its complement of MiG 29K Fighter Aircraft.
The benign role of the Navy in terms of safeguarding offshore economic assets, as well as rendering Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), is portrayed through the murals on the sides. These depict flood relief operations performed in Maharashtra on Mahalaxmi Express in July 2019, escort operations conducted in the Persian Gulf (Operation Sankalp), and the defence of oil platforms by Fast Attack Craft.
Overall, the tableau aims to showcase the Navy as a credible and combat-ready military force, which in service of the nation, protects its economic assets and provides assistance to its populace in times of crisis and natural calamities.
