Conakry, the capital of the Republic of Guinea, West Africa, has been named World Book Capital for 2017. The decision was made by an international committee of experts during a meeting at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris.

The selection committee singled out Conakry “on account of the quality and diversity of its programme, in particular its focus on community involvement” as well as “for its well-structured budget and clear development goals with a strong emphasis on youth and literacy”.

While welcoming the quality of all applications received by UNESCO for the title of World Book Capital 2017, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, endorsed the Committee’s decision to designate Conakry World Book Capital for 2017.

In congratulating Conakry, the Director-General said, “Books, learning and reading are key to human life. The strong investment of the Republic of Guinea in promoting books and literacy bears witness to a clear vision of culture and education as drivers of development and recovery, and UNESCO is determined to support these efforts.”

The World Book Capital is selected every year by the international organizations that represent the three major sectors of the book industry: the International Publishers Association (IPA), the International Booksellers Federation (IBF), and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). The year starts on 23 April, World Book and Copyright Day, and brings together the city’s publishers, writers and book industry to promote and celebrate books and reading over the next 12 months.

Conakry is the 17th city to be designated World Book Capital, after Madrid (2001), Alexandria (2002), New Delhi (2003), Antwerp (2004), Montreal (2005), Turin (2006), Bogota (2007), Amsterdam (2008), Beirut (2009), Ljubljana (2010), Buenos Aires (2011), Yerevan (2012), Bangkok (2013), Port Harcourt (2014) Incheon (2015) and Wroclaw (2016).

International Spanish jewelry firm Carrera y Carrera’s new Alegoria collection presents pieces where butterflies are the protagonists.

The jewelry pieces depict butterflies in various poses — sitting on flowers, taking flight, or fluttering.

“Butterflies are fascinating and full of meaning and soul. They inspire stories that give flight to fantasies and desires,” explains the firm. “So, via the Alegoria collection, the master goldsmiths at Carrera y Carrera are paying tribute to eternal femininity with jewels that are characterized by life, harmonious movement, and weightlessness.”

Alegoria is a collection of earrings, rings, and necklaces in white and yellow gold with pink sapphires and diamonds.

The fourth annual International Jazz Day was celebrated around the world on April 30, 2015, with Paris, France, serving as the 2015 Global Host City.

The International Jazz Day encourages and highlights the power of jazz as a force for freedom and creativity that promotes intercultural dialogue and unites people from all corners of the globe. The celebration is recognized on the official calendars of both UNESCO and the United Nations.

The celebration kicked off in Paris, France, with a daylong series of jazz education programs, performances, and community outreach. In the evening, an All-Star Global Concert at UNESCO Headquarters featured stellar performances by internationally acclaimed artists.

In other countries worldwide, libraries, schools, universities, performing arts venues, community centers, artists, and arts organizations celebrated the day through presentations, concerts, and jazz-focused programs.

Earlier, a one-hour television special of the first annual International Jazz Day All-Star Global Concert was broadcast on Friday, April 10. The concert featured extraordinary performances by more than 40 world-renowned artists who were gathered at the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York City. These artists included Tony Bennett, Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, Stevie Wonder, Hugh Masekela, Chinese Pianist Lang Lang, Wayne Shorter, Angelique Kidjo, Chaka Khan, Christian McBride, Esperanza Spalding, Shankar Mahadevan, Jimmy Heath, George Duke, and Tabla Maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain.

According to celebrated American pianist Herbie Hancock, “On International Jazz Day, jazz is celebrated, studied, and performed around the world for 24 hours straight. Collaborations abound among jazz icons, scholars, composers, musicians, dancers, writers, and thinkers who embrace the beauty, spirit, and principles of jazz, freely sharing experiences and performances in our big cities and in our small towns, all across our seven continents. I can’t think of a better way to build peace and cultural understanding.”

Auckland, New Zealand - International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8 every year, is particularly pertinent to Team SCA.

This all-female professional sailing team has demonstrated great resilience and courage in so far completing more than half of the Volvo Ocean Race - one of the most demanding sports events in the world - with the hardest part of the race still ahead of them.

It is the first time in 12 years that women have competed in the punishing 38,739-nautical mile round-the-world yacht race - the ultimate test in human endurance. Swedish sponsor SCA, a leading global hygiene and forest products company, is supporting the team as part of its campaign for women to participate fully in all aspects of society, including those usually dominated by men.

Skippered by renowned British sailor Samantha Davies, Team SCA is about to start Leg Five of the Volvo Ocean Race - from Auckland to Itajai, Brazil - which promises to be the most brutal yet. The crew will be facing fierce winds, deep waves, freezing temperatures, and hazardous icebergs.

The Volvo Ocean Race started in Alicante, Spain in October 2014. It will finish at the end of June 2015 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing (Ian Walker/GBR) bade farewell to their home port for the hazardous Leg 3 on Saturday by leading the fleet out towards their eventual destination of China from under a blanket of fog.

Light winds are forecast for the first few days of a stage which is expected to take about three weeks before the six boats arrive in Sanya, China.

Few had reckoned on a thick fog for the leg departure from Abu Dhabi (1000 UTC) where the boats had spent Christmas and New Year.

The third leg promises to be intriguing all the way but particularly during the Malacca Strait which separates the Indonesian island of Sumatra and Malaysia.

At some stages, it narrows to 1.5nm and is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.

“It’s the most challenging part of the whole race,” Team Alvimedica (Charlie Enright/USA) navigator Will Oxley (AUS) said on the eve of the leg.

“I’m pretty happy dealing with big waves and strong winds, but the complexity of dealing with a narrow channel, and a very large amount of shipping is what causes the problems.

“Some 300ft of steel coming at you at 20 knots is always concerning, particularly if you haven’t got much control over your speed if there’s not much wind.

“Then you have squalls, very violent squalls in the night, and there’s lots of fishermen who are not showing navigation lights and have long nets. You can get tangled in the nets, or worse still, run someone over. So it’s very stressful.”

Here are the Latest Overall standings in the Volvo Ocean Race In-Port Series:

  1. Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing
  2. Team Brunel
  3. Team SCA
  4. Team Alvimedica
  5. Dongfeng Race Team
  6. MAPFRE
  7. Team Vestas Wind

The Newsmakers Committee of The National Press Club, Washington DC, will host government and industry software experts to address data advances and innovation at a Newsmaker forum in the Club’s Zenger Room at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 10th in the National Press Building, 529 14th St. NW, Washington, D.C.

The group will hold an expert discussion about how data really works, the promise of continued innovation and the need to foster a policy environment that ensures society captures the maximum possible benefit. Innovative new software, vast computing power and connected devices have taken us to a new era of data innovation, changing the way the world identifies and solves problems. The benefits of this innovation extend to nearly every aspect of business, the economy and modern society, but the increasing abundance of data also has raised questions for many people, and it has fed misperceptions.

Newsmaker speakers at this event will include Victoria Espinel, former Bush Administration Intellectual Property Czar; Bruce Andrews, Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Commerce; John Nesi, VP Market Development at Rockwell Automation; and Dr. Jane Snowdon, Chief Innovation Officer at IBM.

This newsmakers event is open to credentialed media and press club members, free of charge. No advance registration is required.
