International Press Institute (IPI) Global Executive Board welcomes Five New Board Members.
— Leading editors from South Korea, India, Germany, Malaysia, and Finland were elected to Global Executive Board at the 2023 IPI World Congress in Vienna.
Vienna, Austria, June 19, 2023 — The International Press Institute (IPI) elected five new members to its global Executive Board during the 2023 IPI World Congress in Vienna. These esteemed editors hail from South Korea, India, Germany, Malaysia, and Finland.
• IPI General Assembly, at its meeting in Vienna on May 25, 2023, elected the following as new IPI Board Members:
Juno Bang, Executive Vice President, The Chosun Daily Newspaper, South Korea.
Barkha Dutt, Founder-Editor, Mojo Story, India.
Wolfgang Krach, Editor-in-Chief, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Germany.
Esther Ng Sek Yee, Chief Content Officer, Star Media Group, Malaysia.
Laura Saarikoski, Editor-in-Chief, Premium, Helsingin Sanomat, Finland.
IPI Executive Director Frane Maroević expressed his confidence in the new members, stating they will strengthen IPI’s expertise and global outreach. He believes they will help develop solutions to the threats and challenges faced by independent media worldwide. The Executive Board members will work with the IPI global membership network to promote the conditions that allow journalism to fulfill its public function, the most important of which is the media’s ability to operate free from interference.
• The IPI thanked Mahfuz Anam and Riyad Mathew, who finished their terms as Executive Board members. They gave valuable advice, guidance, and support to the IPI community. While they stepped down, they remain valued members. Mr. Mathew, Chief Associate Editor of THE WEEK, India, will now chair IPI’s India National Committee.
IPI Executive Board members serve three-year terms that may be extended for a second term. The organization’s highest governing body, the IPI General Assembly, comprises all IPI members.
