WASHINGTON, July 6, 2023 — The National Press Club in Washington, DC, the world’s leading professional organization for journalists, has chosen Veronica Irwin, a San Francisco-based graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, as the recipient of its prestigious 2023 Shirley & Dennis Feldman Fellowship.

The National Press Club awards this Fellowship to outstanding graduate students in journalism. It selected Irwin for the award for her exceptional writing skills and versatility. She has covered various topics, including financial technology, Oakland’s sideshow culture, the San Francisco homeless crisis, and open banking.

In her application essay, Irwin said that she wants to continue her education to impact the people she writes about significantly. After completing her graduate studies at New York University’s Business and Economic Reporting Program, Irwin plans to continue reporting on financial technology, but with a difference. She wants to write comprehensive stories based on an in-depth analysis of the facts that will lead readers to take action and create change.

Irwin’s supervisors at Protocol, where she worked as a breaking news reporter, praised her creative story ideas, collaborative spirit, and drive. They described her as having considerable empathy, a strong work ethic, and the ability to win over even the most sophisticated sources.

The National Press Club Journalism Institute, an affiliate of the National Press Club, administers the scholarship.
