Photos: Three Range Rover Diesel Hybrid prototypes have completed the ultimate engineering sign-off test by traversing 13 countries over 53 days from Solihull, UK, to Mumbai, India.
Mumbai, India. October 14, 2013 — Three Range Rover Diesel Hybrid prototypes have completed the ultimate engineering sign-off test by traversing 13 countries over 53 days from Solihull, UK, to Mumbai, India. The world’s first ever hybrid expedition along the Silk Trail and one of the boldest driving adventures ever pursued by Land Rover.
Hostile conditions on the route included asphalt roads riddled with vast and deep potholes, dusty desert trails in 43°C heat and numerous miles of mud and gravel tracks and cattle trails. In addition, river crossings, passes clinging to the edges of mountains partly blocked by rock falls, the thin air of extremely high altitudes and the dense and erratic traffic of Chinese and Indian roads all added to the test of man and machine.
The Silk Trail 2013 expedition was the final validation test for the Range Rover Hybrid before it is signed-off for production. From the home of the Legend in Solihull, UK, it blazed a trail through France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China (including Tibet), Nepal and India. For much of this distance the expedition followed the legendary Silk Road trading routes that first connected Asia with Europe more than 2,500 years ago. Overnight halts were made in hotels, hostels and tents at many of the same staging posts visited all those years ago by Silk Road merchants, missionaries and mercenaries.
Where the north and south Silk Roads split, near the remote city of Kashgar in north-western China, the expedition pioneered a mountainous route never previously completed by a vehicle from outside the country and never previously seen in its entirety by any westerner - the Xinjiang-Tibet highway, which put the new Range Rover Hybrid through its paces at heights of over 5,300 metres above sea level.
Seven consecutive days were spent at altitudes between 11,000 and 17,648 feet (3,350 and 5,379 metres). At such great heights, oxygen content in the air is reduced from the 21 percent found at sea-level to as little as 10 percent, making movement more difficult for humans and internal combustion engines. The Range Rovers continued to make good progress, benefitting from the electric motor’s instant torque at 0 rpm and despite being laden with heavy loads including luggage, camping gear, food, medical equipment, and aerodynamically-unfriendly roof-racks carrying spare wheels, tyres and jerry cans of fuel.
Negotiating tracks so sticky with mud that they were impassable to other types of vehicle, the Range Rover hybrid’s engine combination - with a 35kW electric motor supporting the TDV6 3.0 litre turbo-diesel engine - returned excellent fuel consumption for a vehicle so spacious and powerful. Throughout the epic journey the Range Rover Hybrids typically returned 36 to 37 mpg.
Land Rover development engineers closely monitored data loggers fitted to each car, sending back more than 300 gigabytes of detailed technical records to their engineering team at Gaydon in the UK. The purpose of the expedition was not to test the reliability of mechanical components, which are already proven, but to fine-tune the calibration of engine and transmission software to ensure perfectly seamless performance in all terrains and extreme temperatures and altitudes. Technical setbacks reflected the roughness of the road surfaces: 15 punctures among the expedition’s three Range Rover Hybrid and four support vehicles, four wheels damaged by deep potholes, and four windscreens cracked by stones thrown-up on loose surfaces.
Peter Richings, Jaguar Land Rover Hybrids and Electrification Director who took part in the final leg from Jaipur to Mumbai commented: “The world’s first diesel hybrid expedition along the Silk Trail pioneered an ambitious route across Europe and Asia that would have been impassable to most other types of vehicle - but no matter how hostile the conditions, the Range Rover Hybrid prototypes took it all in their stride.
“In developing the hybrid-powered Range Rover, our objective was to gain hybrid’s fuel economy and carbon emissions advantages without compromising the Range Rover’s go-anywhere capabilities, its cabin space or its refinement. The success of this remarkable expedition clearly demonstrates we have achieved that.”

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. and BANGALORE, India: IBM today unveiled a set of new innovations from its Customer Experience Lab, dedicated to helping business leaders gain deeper insights into individual customers and transform the way customers experience their products, services and brands through the use of mobile, social, cloud and advanced analytics technologies.
Since the Lab’s launch in March 2013, IBM Research scientists and business consultants have worked together with more than 100 clients from across the world to co-create a variety of new technologies and services to transform the front office, revolutionizing how companies interact and engage with customers. In this new age of the digital customer, organizations are reassessing how to drive brand loyalty and accelerate business growth by moving away from addressing their customers as mass audiences toward cultivating and creating new value from personalized customer relationships.
To help address these challenges, the IBM Customer Experience Lab team in India has introduced three new technologies, each focused on driving innovation in social, mobile as well as Big Data and analytics technologies to help organizations capture and act on deeper customer insights. These technologies build on the work the team has completed around the Watson Engagement Advisor.
• IBM Edge Analytics connects people with contextual information. Once a user has opted in for the service, the tool cross-references the user’s location with the user’s activity to provide useful insights. As users conduct daily transactions, such as buying airline tickets or shopping at the mall, the system sends relevant promotions by email and mobile alerts, per the user’s preferences. An early adopter of the technology, IndusInd Bank in India, has embedded IBM Edge Analytics within its customer channels, such as Internet Banking, ATM, SMS Alerts, Phone Banking and Branch Offices. In addition to helping the bank better understand its own customers, the technology is helping it reach non-customers.
• Vibes is an enterprise software solution to help CMOs target consumers and communities that care about and participate in their industry. Individuals are identified by analyzing their interaction on social networks, and then cross-referenced with their purchase history with the company, or information about their interests based on other social networking activity. For example, a retailer can research past purchases of its Facebook fans to better determine what special offers to make to them. Several leading telecommunications providers in India are currently piloting Vibes to identify the right set of candidates for promoting specific products to increase penetration.
• Social Media Event Tracker Tool (SMETT) leverages natural language processing, text mining technology and advanced analytics to comb through millions of public social network messages to derive meaningful insights. The tool was used recently by ABS CBN, a television news network in the Philippines, to analyze Twitter chatter in both English and the local language (Tagalog) about candidates in the country’s recent mid-term Senatorial elections. ABS CBN used the analysis, which filtered to them in near real-time, to generate new articles for their website as part of their election coverage. Retailers are also turning to SMETT to find out what people think about their products. The tool’s ability to quickly derive insight about numerous related topics in any language could help a retailer find out why a product is popular or improve its online customer service.
“Customers across the world are using innumerable channels - from social networks to online product review sites - to express their individual experience with products and services. This is fueling an explosion of data and driving a radical shift in how companies must engage with their customers to thrive and stay competitive,” said Ramesh Gopinath, Director, IBM Research - India. “The innovations we are developing with clients in the Customer Experience Lab are enabling companies to transform their front office with speed and at scale, reshaping strategy, operations and offerings to attract, retain and exceed the expectations of an increasingly powerful customer.”
The IBM Customer Experience Lab is headquartered at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., supported by researchers at IBM’s 12 global labs including Africa, Brazil, California, China, India, Israel, Japan, Switzerland, and Texas. The Lab brings together skills across disciplines including service science, industries research, mathematics and business optimization, social, mobile, Smarter Commerce, data mining, cloud computing, security and privacy, cognitive computing and systems management.

The newest Mercedes-Benz E-Class (the 2014 E250 BlueTEC sedan) has achieved an impressive estimated EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) rating of 45 miles per gallon on the highway and 28 mpg around town.
According to Mercedes-Benz USA, the E250 BlueTEC is powered by high-efficiency turbodiesel engine. The all-aluminum, in-line four-cylinder engine makes use of four valves per cylinder and dual overhead camshafts with vane-type variable valve timing, producing 195 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.
To ensure the E250 BlueTEC meets exhaust emission regulations in all 50 U.S. states, the BlueTEC system uses AdBlue injection to make the diesel as clean as a state-of-the-art gasoline engine.
As modern all-wheel-drive systems become more refined, they are becoming increasingly popular, especially in the luxury car market. With negligible weight and fuel-efficiency tradeoffs, full-time four-wheel drive provides year-round traction and stability benefits on both wet and dry roads. According to Mercedes-Benz, optional on the E250 BlueTEC, the latest Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC Four-Wheel Drive system can be cleanly integrated into the 7-speed automatic transmission so it fits right into the standard body and utilizes the existing front suspension.
Further, according to the company, it focuses on real-world safety with the goal of accident-free driving, and the new E-Class offers more than 30 standard and optional active and passive safety systems under the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive comfort and safety portfolio. The Driver Assistance Package offers the following content:
• DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist: radar-based cruise control system with semi-autonomous steering inputs that can work from 0-124 mph depending on road conditions.
• PRE-SAFE Brake with pedestrian detection: radar and stereo cameras detect vehicles and pedestrians in front of the vehicle and can adjust braking according to the situation, and apply full brakes if necessary.
• PRE-SAFE PLUS: rear-facing radar that senses possible rear collisions and prepares the vehicle to help reduce the injury risk for the passengers in a rear-end collision.
• BAS PLUS with Cross Traffic Assist: reads cross-traffic encounters with stereo cameras and adds appropriate brake assistance.
• Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Protection: assists by corrective one-sided braking.

• At recently concluded Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Nokia announced plans to extend high-end innovations to more people in more markets.
Four new devices bring innovation to new price points, while Nokia’s HERE location suite becomes available for non-Nokia phones in the Windows Phone ecosystem. And Nokia and Microsoft are combining their strength in the enterprise sector to bring more business customers to Windows Phone.
• “The momentum behind Nokia is gathering pace. The launches today reflect our commitment to broadening our devices and services portfolio to meet the demands of people and businesses around the globe,” said Stephen Elop, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nokia. “By offering better experiences at a more affordable price, we are reinventing the battle for affordable mobile devices.”
Nokia Lumia 720 and Nokia Lumia 520 have expanded Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 portfolio —
The Nokia Lumia 720 delivers a high-end camera performance at a mid-range price point. According to Nokia, “A large f/1.9 aperture and exclusive Carl Zeiss optics are designed to deliver bright, clear pictures day and night, while the HD-quality, wide-angle front-facing camera makes taking pictures with friends and video calling more enjoyable. The sleek and stylish smartphone comes with the latest high-end Nokia Lumia experiences, including Nokia Music, the HERE location suite, and the option to add wireless charging with a snap-on wireless charging cover.”
The Nokia Lumia 720 comes in five colors. Rollout is planned to start in Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore in Q1 2013, before continuing into broader markets in Q2, including China as well as key markets in Europe, Asia, Africa and India.
The Nokia Lumia 520 is Nokia’s most affordable Windows Phone 8 smartphone, delivering experiences normally only found in high-end smartphones, such as the digital camera lenses found on the flagship Nokia Lumia 920, Nokia Music, and the HERE location suite.

LiveSight(TM) also powers Place Tag, a new digital lens introduced for Lumia. Combining Nokia’s unique capabilities in location and imaging, Place Tag adds location stamps to photos with relevant information about pictured places,” the company explained.
