Fabriano, Italy, 21 June 2019 — From 10 to 15 June 2019, in Fabriano, Italy, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network XIII Annual Conference gathered 50 Mayors among 480 participates from some 145 cities worldwide.
Committed to achieving the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, through culture-oriented policies, the Mayors exchanged ideas on the theme of “The Ideal City,” and shared examples of how their cities are addressing community needs by building on culture and creativity to develop innovative and inclusive urban strategies.
Sergio Mattarella, President of Italy, Ernesto Ottone, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture, Gabriele Santarelli, Mayor of Fabriano, and Maria Francesca Merloni, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Creative Cities, who opened the Conference on 12 June, emphasized culture’s capacity to connect peoples and communities, to foster dialogue and to bring about positive social, economic and environmental change. “Culture goes beyond all boundaries,” said President Mattarella.
• The cross-cutting power of culture for sustainable development:
Participants explored prospects for the future of their cities by focusing on the role of culture across development areas including education, inclusiveness, environment and economic growth.
City Planners and Mayors are investing significantly in culture to make their cities better and sustainable. As new practices evolve, Creative Cities are emerging as hubs of experimentation that lead to innovative and successful models of sustainable development —
• LAB.2030 - Generating innovative ideas
The Conference provided an opportunity to share the first publication of the UCCN LAB.2030 Initiative, entitled “Voices of the City: UNESCO Creative Cities moving towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. The book demonstrates diverse ways in which the Creative Cities embrace culture in their local policies.
For example, a strategy on transitioning from an industrial to a forward-thinking city is used in Saint-Étienne (France) to explore new paths towards economic development, including innovative solutions for vacant infrastructures. In Santos (Brazil), a Creative Ecofactory has been established to stimulate skills development and boost employability for people from marginalized communities. Other examples include Cairo (Egypt), where new ways of connecting heritage to local economies are emerging, and Sydney (Australia), whose local government is committed to countering gender bias and where the number of female writers has increased in three years from 32% in 2015 to 53% in 2018.
There are currently 180 Creative Cities in 72 countries. While differing geographically, demographically or economically, they are all committed to develop and exchange innovative best practices to promote creative industries, strengthen participation in cultural life, and integrate culture into sustainable urban development policies.
The Annual Conference in 2020 will focus on the theme of “Creativity, Path to Equality.” City of Santos (Brazil) will host it.

Created in 2004, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) fosters international co-operation within and across cities of the world that have invested in culture and creativity as an accelerator of sustainable development.
The UNESCO Creative Cities Network covers seven creative fields: Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts, and Music.
The Creative Cities Network is composed of cities committed to pooling their resources, their experiences, and knowledge for the common objectives outlined in the Network’s Mission. The member cities actively cooperate at the international level through inter-city partnerships.
Today the network brings together 180 cities from 72 countries from all regions of the world. The UNESCO Creative Cities have a joint mission: placing creativity and cultural industries at the core of their urban development plan to make cities safe, resilient, inclusive and sustainable, in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

India has three UNESCO Creative Cities — Jaipur (Crafts and Folk Art), Varanasi (Music), and Chennai (Music).
Mumbai, renowned for the production of Hindi films, is considering applying for the ‘UNESCO Creative City of Film’ designation. This designation would promote its film industry on the global platform and also reinforce the city’s reputation as a hub of heritage, art, and culture.
[Cities with the ‘UNESCO Creative City of Film’ designation include Yamagata, Japan; Terrassa, Spain; Sydney, Australia; Sofia, Bulgaria; Santos, Brazil; Rome, Italy; Qingdao, China; Galway, Ireland; Busan, South Korea; Lodz, Poland; Bristol, United Kingdom; Bradford, United Kingdom; and Bitola, North Macedonia.]
According to reports, several cities from India are in the race to join the prestigious network, and they include Mumbai (Film), Indore (Gastronomy), Chanderi (Crafts and Folk Art), Gwalior (Music), Bhopal (Literature), Srinagar (Crafts and Folk Art), Hyderabad (Crafts and Folk Art), Amritsar (Gastronomy), and Lucknow (Music), among others.
Each application is required to include, among other necessary documents, an official letter of intent signed by the Mayor of the City, as well as a formal letter of support by the National Commission for UNESCO concerned. In the case of India, each application would need to be approved by the Indian National Commission for Co-operation with UNESCO (INCCU).
National Commissions can endorse a maximum of 4 applications per country, i.e., a maximum of four claims per state is allowed. Further, a maximum of two requests from the same country, and in two different creative fields, would be eligible for the ‘UNESCO Creative City’ designation.
Furthermore, cities that have submitted an application to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as part of two consecutive calls and that did not receive the designation, shall respect a moratorium of 4 years before presenting a new application.
UNESCO recommends that the candidate cities consult key local experts in the preparation of their applications. WASHINGTON, DC — New York Times senior economics correspondent Neil Irwin will discuss his new book, “How to Win in a Winner-Take-All World: The Definitive Guide to Adapting and Succeeding in High-Performance Careers” in a National Press Club Headliners book event on Wednesday, June 26, 2019.
The event begins at 6:30 pm in the conference rooms, and will include a moderated discussion with Irwin, questions from the audience, and a book signing.

In his book, Irwin draws on data, analysis, and reporting to provide a roadmap for success in a shifting world of work. Irwin argues that successful people bring multiple skills together, acting as a “glue person” among people with different specialties. The book takes insights from behemoth companies such as Microsoft, Walmart, and Goldman Sachs, as well as smaller companies, such as the manufacturer of Jim Beam bourbon to show what it takes to succeed amid technological change and global competition.
Irwin, the author of The New York Times best-seller, “The Alchemists: Three Central Bankers and a World on Fire,” is a founding member of The Upshot, the Time’s site for analytical journalism. He has an MBA from Columbia University.

Paris, France, 06 June 2019 — The Italian city of Fabriano will host this year’s UNESCO Creative Cities Conference from 10 to 15 June. A cradle of papermaking in Europe since the second half of the 13th century and throughout the Renaissance, Fabriano joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) six years ago in the field of crafts and folk art.
Sergio Mattarella, President of Italy; Gabriele Santarelli, Mayor of Fabriano; Ernesto Ottone R., Assistant Director-General for Culture of UNESCO; and Maria Francesca Merloni, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Creative Cities; will open the first plenary session of the meeting on 12 June 2019.
Some 400 delegates representing the 180 cities of UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network will debate this year’s theme, “The Ideal City,” and exchange their diverse experiences and ideas for meeting the challenges of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the city level.
A record 50 mayors will participate in the conference, which will bring together municipal decision-makers from Al-Ahsa (Saudi Arabia) to Buenos Aires (Argentina), from Dakar (Senegal) to Budapest (Hungary), and from Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) to Wuhan (China). They will examine ways to anchor culture in development frameworks and policies and promote sustainable urban regeneration, social cohesion, employment, and entrepreneurship.
Flagship initiatives featured at this year’s conference will include the Lend a Hand project targeting vulnerable communities in Nassau (Bahamas), a regeneration program promoting green areas and walkability in Porto-Novo (Benin) and an innovative citizen-led project aimed at engaging youth in Geelong (Australia).
Launched in 2004, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network includes 180 cities from 72 countries focusing on seven fields of activity: crafts and folk art, media arts, design, film, gastronomy, literature, and music.
Representatives of the three UNESCO Creative Cities from India — Jaipur, Varanasi, and Chennai — are also expected to attend the conference.

New Delhi — In a major initiative to explore possibilities of collaboration, India’s Ministry of Information & Broadcasting is organizing a Special Interactive Session with Mr. John Bailey, President of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, on May 28, at Siri Fort Auditorium, in New Delhi.
The interaction will not only deliver insights into the thought leadership at Oscars but will also be informative for critical stakeholders attending the event. It will throw light on the nuances behind the craft of cutting edge filming techniques and help develop an understanding amongst the Indian film-makers about creating world-class content.
Mr. Bailey will also be interacting with Mr. Amit Khare, Secretary, Ministry of I&B. The interaction will be an opportunity for the Ministry to highlight financial incentives offered to foreign filmmakers to shoot in India. They will also discuss a single window facilitation mechanism for filming in India, financing co-production of films, and promotion of single-screen theatres in small towns across the country.
Recently, in the 47th edition of International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Mr. Robert Yeoman, renowned Cinematographer, and Mr. Alan Heim, distinguished Film Editor from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, had taken Master Classes in their respective fields. This interactive session presents an opportunity to enhance the outreach of the Festival further, and explores the possibilities of collaboration with the Academy for the Golden Jubilee edition of IFFI to be held in Goa in November 2019.
John Bailey is the first Cinematographer to hold the position of Academy President. His credits include “Ordinary People,” “The Big Chill,” “Groundhog Day,” “As Good as It Gets,” “The Anniversary Party,” “The Way Way Back” and “A Walk in the Woods.” As a cinematographer, he is best known for his collaborations with directors Paul Schrader, Lawrence Kasdan, Michael Apted, and Ken Kwapis.
In 1985, Bailey shared the Cannes Film Festival Best Artistic Contribution Award with Eiko Ishioka and Philip Glass for “Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters.” He was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Cinematography for “Tough Guys Don’t Dance,” and the Camerimage Golden Frog Award for Best Cinematography for “Forever Mine.”

MotoGP world champion, Marc Márquez, destroyed the field at the Gran Premio Motul De La Republica Argentina to win by a distance from Valentino Rossi and Andrea Dovizioso.
The Autódromo Termas de RÃo Hondo managers were expecting bad weather, but they conducted the race in the right, dry conditions.
Márquez’s winning margin of 9.816 seconds is his most significant winning margin of all time in MotoGP.
Márquez started from pole position and was never headed, lapping at around half a second quicker than the field for the majority of the race.
The reigning world champion could have won by an even more significant margin, but slowed towards the end to protect himself from any potential issues with his rear tire.
Rossi and Dovizioso were in a battle for second place that was eventually settled on the final lap when Rossi passed Dovizioso up the inside at Turn 7 to take the runner-up spot.
The result sees Márquez overtake Dovizioso in the overall standings, with Rossi moving up to the third position.
Dovizioso revealed: “Happy for the podium because when we came here, it was our target, but I’m not happy in the way the tire worked during the race, and I had to stay in front to manage the tires.”
Jorge Lorenzo had to settle for 12th place after admitting before the race that he’s taking things cautiously on his return from injury.
Red Bull KTM Factory duo Pol Espargaro and Johann Zarco finished 10th and 15th respectively, while Red Bull KTM Tech 3 pair Miguel Oliveira and Hafizh Syahrin were placed 11th and 16th respectively.

New Delhi — On 30 April, celebrating International Jazz Day 2019, the new Piano Man Jazz Club in Gurgaon, jointly with UNESCO New Delhi, will bring on stage young jazz talent from all over India and the world. India’s leading Latin Jazz Pianist, Pradyumna Singh Manot will drive The Piano Man Gurgaon’s first performance. Elena Diletta Friedrich Sciubba on voice, Kunal Netrapal on drums, and Sonic Shori on bass will accompany him.
The UNESCO New Delhi Director, Eric Falt and the founder of the Piano Man brand, Arjun Sagar Gupta, will take the stage with the band to welcome all the guests on the occasion of International Jazz Day, which will also be celebrated at other locations in India — including Mumbai, Goa, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru.
UNESCO proclaimed 30 April as the International Jazz Day in 2011, upon a proposal made by legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who is also a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue. The Day aims to recognize the power of jazz music to promote peace, dialogue, and mutual understanding, and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe. This year the global celebration will take place in Melbourne, Australia and International Jazz Day will be celebrated in more than 190 countries around the world.
“Jazz has its roots in the struggle for freedom and resistance against oppression. This music, with its various styles, has been embraced and integrated into many cultures, morphing into new forms of expression, infinitely resonating with the diversity of song and sound across the globe,” says UNESCO Director-General, Audrey Azoulay in her message on the occasion of International Jazz Day 2019.
The Piano Man first location in New Delhi has hosted almost 1,400 concerts in the three and a half years since its inception, including some of the finest musicians from all over the world. The opening of a second Piano Man location in Gurgaon marks the beginning of a new journey for the brand and its mission.

WASHINGTON, DC — On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans took to streets, parks, and auditoriums to protest environmental degradation. This first Earth Day sparked the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts.
Twenty years later, one of Earth Day’s original organizers, Denis Hayes, appeared at the National Press Club, Washington, DC. He announced the launch of Earth Day as a global organization, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries.
On Monday, April 22, 2019, Denis Hayes will again return to the National Press Club to announce major global mobilizations ahead of Earth Day’s 50th anniversary, including “Vote for the Earth,” “Earth Challenge 2020,” and the 2020 theme for Earth Day, which will focus on global demand for transformative climate action.
This news conference will take place at 10:00 a.m. in the Club’s Zenger Room and is open to credentialed media and members of the Club.

Washington DC/New Delhi — A landmark citizen-led cleanup of the iconic River the Ganges is to be launched by the Earth Day Network as part of comprehensive plans to mark the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.
The initiative gets underway as part of Earth Day 2019 high in the Himalayan mountains at Devaprayag where two glacier-fed streams meet to form India’s most famous and sacred river.
This first phase will evolve over the next 15 months to encompass 100 cities and towns close to the Ganges—known as the Ganga in India- as it meanders to the famous Sunderbans Delta.
Kathleen Rogers, President of Earth Day Network, said: “The project on the Ganges will serve as a lightning rod for many more countries and communities to get involved worldwide. As we transition into Earth Day 2020, we will mark the anniversary with a myriad of events including what we are calling the Great Global Cleanup.”
Anil Arora, Director of Partnerships, Earth Day Network, added: ‘’This is a people’s movement that will help those at the grassroots level understand that keeping the Holy Ganges clean is beneficial to them. It will make them a part of the campaign to keep it clean. While on the policy level, the government has several schemes in place to clean the Ganges, this will be a bottom-up approach in support of the government initiatives.’’
Karuna Singh, Earth Day Network’s Regional Director Asia and Country Director in India, added: “Clean up of the Ganges has a potentially significant role to play. Take plastics as just one barometer - according to the World Economic Forum, ninety percent of plastic pollution in the ocean comes from ten rivers, eight of which are in Asia and two in India - including the Ganges.”

NEW YORK, April 15, 2019 — Reuters, the world’s largest multimedia news provider, was today awarded two 2019 Pulitzer Prizes from Columbia University. It is for the second consecutive year that Reuters has received two Pulitzer Prizes.
Reuters journalists Wa Lone, Kyaw Soe Oo, and their colleagues were recognized as co-winners, alongside the Associated Press, in the International Reporting category, for their series of investigations on the mass expulsion of the Rohingya from Myanmar.
Reuters photographers Mike Blake, Lucy Nicholson, Loren Elliott, Edgard Garrido, Adrees Latif, Goran Tomasevic, Kim Kyung Hoon, Alkis Konstantinidis, Carlos Garcia Rawlins, Carlos Barria and Ueslei Marcelino were recognized in the Breaking News Photography category, for their photos of the mass migration of Central and South Americans towards the U.S. border, and its aftermath. Awarding the prize to Reuters, the Pulitzer committee recognized the team for “a vivid and startling visual narrative of the urgency, desperation, and sadness of migrants as they journeyed to the U.S. from Central and South America.”
“While it’s gratifying that we got recognized for the work, public attention should be focused more on the people about whom we report than on us: in this case, the Rohingya and the Central American migrants,” said Reuters Editor-in-Chief Stephen J. Adler.
“I’m thrilled that Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo and their colleagues have been recognized for their extraordinary, courageous coverage, and our photojournalists for their moving pictures that show humanity defying huge obstacles,” said Adler.

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 14, 2019 — Some 350 athlete representatives from 185 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), 50 International Federations (IFs), five continental Athletes Commissions (ACs), the ACs of all the Organising Committees of the upcoming Olympic Games, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the World Olympians Association (WOA) met over the past three days in Lausanne for the 9th edition of the International Athletes’ Forum (IAF). It was the biggest ever gathering of official athlete representatives. Also attending was IOC President Thomas Bach, Olympic Champion in fencing in Montreal 1976 and member of the first IOC Athletes’ Commission in 1981.
“This IAF was empowering, exciting and unifying,” highlighted Kirsty Coventry, IOC AC Chair.
“We had a very productive meeting,” said IOC AC Vice Chair Danka Bartekova, who led the discussions. “The IOC Athletes’ Commission will take the proposals to the IOC Executive Board. The IOC President has told me in our discussions during the Forum that he will fully support our recommendations.
“We look forward to their implementation, which will ensure that the support for athletes at all levels is improved even further.”

LOS ANGELES, CA - The Academy is now accepting entries for its 2019 Student Academy Awards competition. All Student Academy Award winners become eligible for Oscars consideration. The entry deadline for submissions is June 1, 2019.
The U.S. competition is open to all full-time undergraduate and graduate students who make their films within the curricular structure of an eligible accredited institution.
The international competition allows two options for students at international film schools to submit their films. In addition to “CILECT” member schools presenting one student film per international film school category, international students may now enter films that qualify through film festivals recognized by the Student Academy Awards Executive Committee.
For the fifth year, students are asked to submit their films online using FilmFreeway, a widely used festival, and competition platform.
The 46th Student Academy Awards presentation will be held on Thursday, October 17, at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
In 1972, the Academy established the Student Academy Awards to provide a platform for emerging global filmmakers by creating opportunities within the industry to showcase their work.
Past winners have gone on to receive 62 Oscar nominations and have won 11 awards. Student Academy Award winners include filmmakers Patricia Cardoso, Pete Docter, Cary Fukunaga, Spike Lee, Trey Parker, Patricia Riggen, and Robert Zemeckis.

The producers describe the documentary as “an epic portrayal of the events surrounding the infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre, where a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St Peter’s Field in Manchester, England, turned into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history. The massacre saw British government forces charge into a crowd of more than 60,000 that had gathered to demand political reform and protest against rising levels of poverty. The forces killed many protesters and injured hundreds more, sparking a nationwide outcry but also further government suppression. The Peterloo Massacre was a defining moment in British democracy which also played a significant role in the founding of The Guardian newspaper.”

Cannes, France, March 26, 2019 — After moving hearts and minds at the last Festival de Cannes with her Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominated Capernaum, which won the Jury Prize in Cannes, Lebanese director Nadine Labaki will be taking over from actor Benicio Del Toro as President of the Un Certain Regard Jury for the 72nd edition of the Festival.
Nadine Labaki’s three feature films catapulted her to international fame, from the Festival de Cannes’ red carpet to the Oscars ceremony a few months ago.
“I remember back when I used to come to Cannes as a film student, I was so excited to experience the world’s most prestigious festival,” she stated. “Back then, it seemed so out of reach to me. I remember getting up early in the morning and the endless queues to get a ticket. It looks like yesterday, but it was fifteen years ago that I filled in the Festival de Cannes’ Cinéfondation registration form, my heart full of hope and my hand shaking.
“Today, I am the President of the Un Certain Regard Jury, which goes to show that sometimes life can be even better than your dreams. I can’t wait to see the films in the Selection. I can’t wait to debate and discuss, to be shaken up, to find inspiration in other artists’ work,” Nadine Labaki explained.
After graduating in audiovisual studies from the University of Beirut, she directed adverts and music videos that frequently won awards. In 2004, she embarked on a Festival de Cannes Cinéfondation Residency to write and develop Caramel, her first feature film, shot two years later and showcased at the Directors’ Fortnight in 2007. This joyous, rebellious ode to female camaraderie was distributed worldwide and became the most successful Lebanese film export of all time. Nadine Labaki continued to explore the female condition, and religious tensions in “Where Do We Go Now?”, a bold, universal fable on tolerance that premiered at Un Certain Regard in 2011.
In 2018, Nadine Labaki was selected for Competition with her powerfully moving Capernaum, a poignant manifesto on damaged childhood, refugees and the cracks in a society that turns its back on humanity. Nadine Labaki won the Jury Prize, that year chaired by Cate Blanchett, and gave an unforgettable speech. Nominated for a Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, Capernaum made its Lebanese director the first woman from the Arabic-speaking world to be nominated in this category.
“To the directors whose films have been selected for Un Certain Regard this year, I would like to say that as a child, I would spend hours gazing out of my bedroom window, watching the world go by. These same eyes can’t wait to watch their films!,” Nadine Labaki said.
The Un Certain Regard screenings will kick off on May 15 with an introduction of the Jury in the evening, a day after the opening of the 72nd edition of the Festival de Cannes on Tuesday, May 14. The jury will announce the Un Certain Regard winners on Friday, May 24.

Chandigarh, 25 March 2019 — The IAF (Indian Air Force) has formally inducted the CH 47 F(I)- Chinook heavy-lift helicopters into its inventory at Air Force Station Chandigarh. Air Chief Marshal B.S. Dhanoa, Chief of the Air Staff, was the chief guest. Various dignitaries attended the event.
IAF had signed a contract with Boeing in September 2015 for 15 Chinook helicopters. Boeing has delivered the first batch of four helicopters on schedule and would provide the last installment by March next year.
According to India’s Ministry of Defence, the addition of heavy-lift CH 47 F(I) helicopter is a significant step towards modernization of Indian Air Force’s helicopter fleet. The aircraft has been customized to suit IAF’s future requirements and capability roadmap. The helicopter has a fully integrated digital cockpit management system, advanced cargo handling capabilities and electronic warfare suite that complement the aircraft’s performance. It is capable of airlifting diverse military and non-military loads into remote locations.

Chief Election Commissioner, Sunil Arora, while appreciating the steps taken, said that formulation of the Code augurs a good beginning. He told the Participants to follow in letter and spirit the commitments made in the Code of Ethics. The Platforms have committed to processing any violations reported within three hours.
The Platforms have also agreed to create a high priority dedicated reporting mechanism for the ECI and appoint dedicated teams during the period of General Elections for taking prompt action on any reported violations. Participants have also agreed to provide a mechanism for political advertisers to submit pre-certified advertisements issued by the Media Certification and Monitoring Committee. The Code of Ethics also promises to facilitate transparency in paid political ads. IAMAI has agreed to coordinate with participants various steps mentioned in this code. Participants have also committed to undertake voter awareness campaigns voluntarily.
The ‘Code of Ethics” has been developed to ensure free, fair & ethical usage of Social Media Platforms to maintain the integrity of the electoral process for the General Elections 2019. It aims to monitor those indulging in disinformation, fake news, hate-mongering, gossiping, and backbiting. The Code voluntarily agreed upon by the Participants comes into operation with immediate effect.
