Jalandhar, Punjab, January 03, 2019 — The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, today delivered the inaugural address at the 106th session of the Indian Science Congress, at Lovely Professional University, in Jalandhar, Punjab.

Reflecting on the theme of the event this year - ‘Future India: Science and Technology’ - the Prime Minister said that India’s real strength would be in connecting its science, technology, and innovation, with its people.

He recalled the great Indian scientists of the past, including J.C. Bose, C.V. Raman, Meghnad Saha, and S.N. Bose, and said that they served the people through “minimum resources” and “maximum struggle.”

“The life and works of hundreds of Indian Scientists are a compelling testament of integration of deep fundamental insights with technology development and nation-building. It is through our modern temples of science that India is transforming its present and working to secure its future,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister recalled former Prime Ministers Lal Bahadur Shastri and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He said that Shastri Ji gave us the slogan: “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan,” while Atal Ji added “Jai Vigyan” to it. He said that now the time has come to take a step further, by adding “Jai Anusandhan.”

The Prime Minister emphasized that the pursuit of science achieves two objectives: generation of profound knowledge; and use of that knowledge for socio-economic good.

“Our Scientists must commit themselves to address problems of affordable healthcare, housing, clean air, water and energy, agricultural productivity and food processing. While Science is universal, technology must be local for providing solutions relevant to local needs and conditions,” the Prime Minister said.

Noting that our national laboratories, central universities, IITs, IISC, TIFR, and IISERs are our strength in research and development, the Prime Minister said that the State Universities and Colleges, too, must develop a robust research ecosystem.

Speaking on achievements in the space sector, the Prime Minister mentioned the success of Cartosat 2 and other satellites. He said preparations are underway for sending three Indians into space, through the Gaganyaan in 2022.

WASHINGTON, D.C., Dec. 8, 2018 — Alison Fitzgerald Kodjak, a correspondent for NPR (National Public Radio), was elected the next President of the National Press Club, the world’s leading professional organization for journalists, on Friday, December 7, 2018.

A three-time George Polk Award-winner during her lengthy career in both print and broadcast journalism, Kodjak will officially assume the duties of the presidency on January 11, 2019.

Kodjak, in her acceptance speech before her fellow members in the Club’s Truman Lounge, pledged to uphold the work of her predecessors in advocating for press freedom worldwide.

“My goal as president is to see the club become a central player in the fight for the future of quality, fact-based journalism here in the US and fight for the freedom of our colleagues around the world.

“Journalists today are under a huge amount of pressure. There are economic challenges - but even more difficult are the attacks on our credibility and character. Also, by habit, we tend to stay in our lanes - we work for the Post, AP or CNN and we compete. We belong to our groups - WHCA, IRE or NABJ. However, the National Press Club is a place where we break those walls down and gather to enjoy each other’s company,” Kodjak said.

Kodjak, who has enjoyed a successful career covering a wide array of subjects in a variety of platforms, is considered well-suited to foster that sense of camaraderie amongst her journalism colleagues. Before joining NPR in 2015, Kodjak spent two years at the Center for Public Integrity, leading projects in financial, telecom, and political reporting. Before joining the Center, she spent more than a decade at Bloomberg News, where she wrote about the convergence of politics, government, and economics, and as part of Bloomberg’s investigative team, reported on the bankruptcy of General Motors Corp. and the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill. A graduate of Georgetown University and Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Kodjak is also the co-author of the book “In Too Deep: BP and the Drilling Race that Took It Down,” published in 2011 by John Wiley & Sons.

Also elected in Friday’s Club elections were: Michael Freedman (UMUC, GW, The Kalb Report) as vice president; Peter Urban (Freelance) as treasurer; and Fouad Arif (Morocco News Agency) as secretary. Elected to the Board of Governors were: Lisa Matthews of the Associated Press, Ferdous Al-Faruque of MedTech Insight, Emily Wilkins of Bloomberg BNA, Del Quentin Wilber of the Los Angeles Times, freelance journalist Antonella Ciancio, and Danny Selnick of Business Wire.

The inaugural gala for the new president of the club, which was founded in 1908 and has 3,100 members worldwide, would be held on January 12, 2019.

Brussels, Belgium, December 6, 2018 — UNESCO convened the Global Education Meeting in Brussels, from 3 to 5 December 2018, to agree on common next steps for education. Stefania Gianini, Assistant-Director General for Education at UNESCO called for “strong political will, sustained collective action and a massive increase of resources.”

UNESCO brought together Ministers, representatives of Member States, multilateral organizations, civil society, the teaching profession, youth, and the private sector. Gianini sought consensus on building an education partnership platform engaging the gamut of development partners across industries. She highlighted the complementary roles and the strengths of partners around the table to keep education on top of the political and private sector agenda.

United Nations Special Advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals, Queen Mathilde of Belgium, and UNESCO Special Envoy on Literacy for Development, Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands, called for partnerships with non-educational players and the private sector. Princess Laurentien urged development partners to make education relevant to other industries and emphasize the shared responsibility of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, adopted by the United Nations in 2015.

UNESCO announced that the WIDE (World Inequality Database on Education) platform would be further developed through the Global Education Monitoring Report and UNESCO Institute of Statistics to understand better inequalities within countries in ensuring access to education, participation, completion, and learning outcomes.

Countries, regional partners, and development agencies adopted the outcome statement - the Brussels Declaration with the following key points:

Although the Global Education Meeting only takes place every four years, partners would work on a continual basis, on the harmonization and strengthening of support to Member States and partners to achieve the education-related targets of the global agenda. This work would be carried out through the UNESCO led SDG-Education 2030 Steering Committee, the global multi-stakeholder mechanism for education in the 2030 Agenda.

Gianini closed the Meeting saying, “2019 is the year of education. We have an opportunity that we cannot and must not waste. Beginning with the new International Day of Education on 24 January, to the High-Level Political Forum and G7 in July, to the UNGA 2019, and the UNESCO General Conference in November. It is a time for action”.

Vienna, Austria, December 1, 2018 — The International Press Institute (IPI), a global network of editors, media executives, and leading journalists, has advised the leaders of the G20 to commit themselves to uphold press freedom in their countries and around the world.

“As the leaders of G20 meet in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to discuss fair and sustainable development, they need to appreciate the fact that such progress is not possible if they do not guarantee press freedom in their countries and elsewhere,” IPI Executive Director Barbara Trionfi said.

“A free and independent press is essential to induce development that reaches all. People can claim their rights and participate in sustainable development processes only when they are well informed. A free press is what enables people to make informed choices.

“IPI calls on G20 leaders to raise the issue of intimidation of journalists with their counterparts from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, India, and the United States, all of whom are attending the summit.

“G20 leaders must take the opportunity of the summit to commit themselves to freedom of the press and safety of journalists and set an example for other countries to follow,” Trionfi stated.

Vienna, Austria, November 18, 2018 — The International Press Institute (IPI), the global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists, has announced that it will hold its 68th World Congress and General Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland from June 4 to 6, 2019 in partnership with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

The World Congress is IPI’s flagship event and a top international forum for issues related to media freedom and quality journalism, gathering more than 300 leading media professionals each year.

“I am delighted that IPI’s 2019 World Congress will take place in Switzerland”, IPI Executive Board Chair Markus Spillmann, a prominent Swiss media expert and former editor-in-chief of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, said.

“The IPI World Congress allows editors, publishers, and journalists with a shared dedication to quality journalism to exchange experiences and discuss common challenges in bringing news to the public. As global political trends continue to cast a shadow over our profession, the opportunity for journalists with shared values to unite is more valuable than ever,” he added.

“It is a particular pleasure for IPI to partner with the EBU at a time in which the fight for active and independent public service broadcasters is essential to preserving democratic, informed societies,” Spillmann stated.

“Journalism has never been more critical to society and democracy. That is why it is so important that we come together as an industry to reflect on our place in the world and learn from each other’s experiences”, EBU Director General Noel Curran said.

“The IPI World Congress is a chance for all media - both public service and commercial - to come together to seek common ground and reinforce the critical role of high-quality, independent journalism and we are delighted to support it,” the EBU Director-General added.

Based in Geneva, the EBU is the world’s leading alliance of public service media. The EBU boasts member organizations in 56 countries in Europe, and an additional 34 Associates in Asia, Africa, Australasia, and the Americas. Its members operate over 2,000 television, radio and online channels and services, reaching an audience of more than 160 billion people around the world in 160 languages.

In 1950, in the aftermath of the Second World War, 34 editors from 15 countries founded the IPI on the belief that a free press will contribute to a better world. Today, with members in nearly 100 countries, IPI brings together media representatives from digital, print and broadcast outlets to address press freedom challenges and to promote independent journalism as a core pillar of democracy.

The International Press Institute (IPI) has been organizing its World Congresses in different cities and countries such as Hamburg, Germany; Yangon, Myanmar; and Cape Town, South Africa. In addition to top editors and journalists, prominent past speakers at IPI Congresses included Nobel Prize Laureates and Heads of States and Governments.

Meanwhile, IPI has warned several third world Governments, including those of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, against any unsolicited, unethical, abusive, sharp-tongued, insensitive, or criminal conduct towards the media persons.

It has called upon “all governments and their official authorities, as well as executive organs, to accord ‘Members of the IPI’ full protection, assistance, and support in pursuance of their professional duties.”

New Delhi — India’s Central Road Research Institute organized a two-day international conference titled “Pavements and Computational Approaches” from 16-17 November 2018, at its premises in New Delhi. The objective of the meeting was to deliberate upon advancements in pavement technology and road infrastructure engineering across the world, with particular emphasis to the requirements of developing countries. Experts discussed issues related to the design and construction of pavements, material characterization, computational analysis, and modeling. Deliberations during the conference brought out new thoughts on technology up-gradation and its successful implementation in the field.

Nitin Gadkari, India’s Minister of Road Transport & Highways, said that the mission of the Road Transport & highways Ministry is to build high-quality roads at low costs. He called upon the experts at the conference to be ready to experiment with innovative technology, make all possible use of indigenous raw material including waste material, and promote the pre-cast technology. He said the thrust of technological innovation should be on reducing costs and time for completion of projects without any compromise on quality.

The crumbling infrastructure, road congestion, growth in heavy vehicle traffic, and insufficient maintenance have rendered the road transport inefficient in developing countries. Significant challenges to the road network require a clear focus on enhanced pavement design, construction, performance evaluation, management and preservation for developing long-lasting, low-maintenance pavements.

Nearly 250 delegates including researchers, entrepreneurs, academicians and field engineers attended the conference.
