Tata Sons and New York Academy of Sciences Announce Prize to Honour Scientists in India

The Tata Transformation Prize will recognize Indian scientists for research to solve societal needs and promote economic competitiveness.

MUMBAI, India, January 4, 2023 — Tata Sons and the New York Academy of Sciences announced the Tata Transformation Prize to recognize and support promising scientists in India who are developing innovative technological solutions to critical societal challenges.

The new prize will be awarded yearly to three scientists for innovations in food security, sustainability, and healthcare. Each winner will receive INR 2 crores and will be honored at a ceremony in India in December.

“This prize will accelerate breakthrough innovations by the Indian scientific community,” said Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of the Board of Tata Sons. “We hope this prize will help bring the transformational work of Indian scientists to light, reward them appropriately, and encourage them to take solutions to market. The Tata Transformation Prize is one small way in which we will promote science and scientists to solve India’s national problems.”

Applicants for the prize must be active researchers with a doctoral degree or equivalent and employed at an eligible university, institute, or other research organization in India. Applicants must propose technologies addressing food security, sustainability, or healthcare challenges with a focus on digital and technological transformation. Prize winners will be scientists whose proposed innovations re-imagine traditional practices and business models, transform technological paradigms, improve public trust, and promote an open and connected world.

“Pathbreaking research takes place in India, resulting in important advances in science around the world,” said Professor Nicholas Dirks, President and CEO of the New York Academy of Sciences. “This prize is focused not only on science but on innovative discoveries that put science to work for the betterment of society, to solving major global challenges in three core areas. We are so pleased to be working with Tata, and Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, to support scientific and technical innovation in India. In addition, it will raise national and international awareness of India’s scientific research and development strengths.”

The Tata Transformation Prize is the latest in a series of prominent awards and scholarship programs the Academy and its partners present each year to accomplished early-career and established scientists worldwide. These initiatives and education and professional development programs for students and young scientists reflect the Academy’s broader commitment to strengthening and diversifying the pipeline for skilled and talented scientists globally.

IMAX Delivers Second Biggest Global Opening of All Time with Massive $48.8 Million Debut of James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water."

NEW YORK, January 03, 2023 — IMAX Corporation announced that moviegoers returned to Pandora in droves with James Cameron’s groundbreaking sci-fi sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” delivering a massive $48.8 million global opening weekend in IMAX theaters. It is the second biggest IMAX international opening of all time.

IMAX built on its historic legacy with this one-of-a-kind franchise, racking up 11.2% of the film’s worldwide gross on just a fraction of the total screens. The original “Avatar” is the highest-grossing film of all time in IMAX.

The North American box office led the way, where IMAX delivered $16.5 million in Domestic box office — 12.3% of total receipts. “Avatar: The Way of Water” also heralded a return to form for IMAX in China, where the Company delivered a $15.8 million opening weekend. IMAX had its most significant opening weekend marketing share ever in China, accounting for 27% of the total box office in China on only 1% of full screens in the market.

“‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is a watershed achievement in filmmaking innovation and technology, and it’s clear that global audiences are choosing to see this film through the best technology for blockbuster entertainment in the world: IMAX,” said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. “As excited as we are about these early results, we anticipate a long and successful run for ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ as more people worldwide book their tickets.”

International IMAX screens outside China delivered $16.5 million at the box office with “Avatar: The Way of Water.” The film scored the biggest IMAX opening weekend of all time in a diverse collection of 11 global markets, including India, Belgium, Czech Republic, Romania, Serbia, Switzerland, Turkey, Vietnam, Chile, Kazakhstan, and New Zealand, where “Avatar: The Way of Water” was filmed. In addition, IMAX recently opened its first theatre in Wellington. Forty-one international markets posted the top five all-time IMAX opening weekends.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” debuted with the most extended IMAX global release across 1,543 screens and is available exclusively in IMAX 3D locations worldwide. The film will screen across the IMAX network through January in most international markets.

Times Square New Year’s Eve Wishing Wall welcomed the Public to Write their Wish for 2023 on Official Event Confetti.


All Wishes Submitted, Virtually or In-Person, appeared on Actual Confetti, Released at Midnight in Times Square on New Year’s Eve.

Times Square, New York City, January 01, 2023 - The Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment, co-organizers of Times Square New Year’s Eve, along with presenting sponsor Planet Fitness, unveiled the New Year’s Eve Wishing Wall a month ago. The Wishing Wall is the premier attraction to visit up to New Year’s Eve. It gives people from around the globe the opportunity to be a part of New Year’s Eve in Times Square by writing their wishes for the upcoming year on pieces of confetti released at midnight on New Year’s Eve.

“The New Year offers people a unique chance to reflect and simultaneously look forward by defining their goals and dreams for a better future,” said Tom Harris, President of the Times Square Alliance. “Revelers celebrating in Times Square and everyone watching on TV will kick off the new year with hope and joy as they watch confetti fall from the sky, filled with people’s wishes and aspirations for a new year.”

“When the Ball dropped, and the clock struck midnight in 2022, we all watched with amazement as a blizzard of confetti blankets the sky filled with the hopes and dreams of people from around the world,” said Jeffrey Straus, President of Countdown Entertainment. “Submitting a confetti wish allows everyone to be part of the magic that happens on New Year’s Eve in Times Square.”

For people visiting Times Square in person, the Wishing Wall was located on one of Times Square’s Broadway plazas between 43rd and 47th Streets every day until December 29. As in years past, one could also submit their wishes virtually.

Each wish collected before December 29 via the Wishing Wall in Times Square or submitted online before December 28 was printed on a piece of confetti and became part of the 3,000 pounds of confetti released at midnight in Times Square on New Year’s Eve.
