New Delhi, June 23, 2023 — Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Minister, expressed his appreciation for the commitment made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and American President Joe Biden to strengthen the strategic partnership between universities in their respective countries.
According to Mr. Pradhan, the recently launched India-US initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology is expected to usher in a new phase of collaboration and accelerate outcomes, given the significant talent pool in India and the US, particularly in emerging technologies and the synergies created by R&D centers of excellence in academic institutions.
The Minister stated that a Joint Task Force, consisting of top IITs and IISc, has been engaged in discussions with the Association of American Universities to this effect.
He further revealed that the Education Ministry would work to establish Indo-U.S. Global Challenge Institutes, in line with the vision of both leaders, to deepen research partnerships and people-to-people exchanges in various areas, including semiconductors, sustainable agriculture, clean energy, health, and pandemic preparedness, and emerging technologies.
Mr. Pradhan expressed his delight that this partnership, which includes industry collaboration and startup enablers, will facilitate the free flow of ideas, student exchange, and joint IPRs, and contribute to developing solutions for a sustainable and secure future.
He added that this is a historic moment when two powerful nations are joining hands in education and research, which will undoubtedly have a global impact in the future.

Times Higher Education Announces Asia University Rankings 2023
— South Asian institutions move up in the latest league table, with Pakistan leading the way.



London, June 22, 2023 — Times Higher Education has announced the latest Asia University Rankings, revealing a rise in South Asian institutions in the top 200.
This year, 32 universities from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka made the cut, compared to 24 in 2022. Pakistan led the way with ten universities in the top 200, up from six the previous year. Meanwhile, the highest-ranking institution from the country, Quaid-i-Azam University, rose from 116th to 98th place.
The University of Dhaka and North South University from Bangladesh came in the top 200 list for the first time.
In contrast, India’s representation in the top 200 increased slightly, with 18 universities in the top 200 rankings.
Japan retained the most-represented nation with 117 institutions.
Tsinghua University and Peking University in China take the first and second positions for the fourth year. Four mainland Chinese universities are in the top 10, compared with three last year.
With three universities, Hong Kong follows with the subsequent highest representation in the top 10. Its leading universities also rise in rank.
The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2023 use the same 13 performance indicators as the World University Rankings, but they are recalibrated to reflect the attributes of Asia’s institutions.
The universities are judged across all their core missions - teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

Washington, DC, June 22, 2023 — Yesterday, as part of his official state visit to the U.S., Prime Minister Modi was welcomed to the White House this morning by President Biden, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, and thousands of Indian-Americans. The two leaders engaged in productive conversations in restricted and delegation-level formats, discussing important issues such as trade, investment, defense, security, energy, climate change, and people-to-people ties.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a private event hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden at the White House. During the event, he had the opportunity to meet the Bidens’ immediate family members and reaffirm the strong friendship between the two countries.
Today, Prime Minister Modi addressed a Joint Sitting of the U.S. Congress at the invitation of several Congressional leaders, including Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Vice President Kamala Harris. He expressed his appreciation for the bipartisan support for India-US relations in the U.S. Congress and shared his vision for elevating bilateral ties. The Prime Minister also highlighted the significant progress made by India and the opportunities it presents for the world. Speaker McCarthy hosted a reception in honor of the Prime Minister, who marked his second address to the Joint Sitting of the U.S. Congress.
