London, June 22, 2023 — Times Higher Education has announced the latest Asia University Rankings, revealing a rise in South Asian institutions in the top 200.

This year, 32 universities from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka made the cut, compared to 24 in 2022. Pakistan led the way with ten universities in the top 200, up from six the previous year. Meanwhile, the highest-ranking institution from the country, Quaid-i-Azam University, rose from 116th to 98th place.

The University of Dhaka and North South University from Bangladesh came in the top 200 list for the first time.

In contrast, India’s representation in the top 200 increased slightly, with 18 universities in the top 200 rankings.

Japan retained the most-represented nation with 117 institutions.

Tsinghua University and Peking University in China take the first and second positions for the fourth year. Four mainland Chinese universities are in the top 10, compared with three last year.

With three universities, Hong Kong follows with the subsequent highest representation in the top 10. Its leading universities also rise in rank.

The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2023 use the same 13 performance indicators as the World University Rankings, but they are recalibrated to reflect the attributes of Asia’s institutions.

The universities are judged across all their core missions - teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
