Powered by an electric motor, Renault’s DeZir is a two-seater coupe.

DeZir’s styling expresses passion.

Under the leadership of Laurens van den Acker, Renault’s Design Department has taken its inspiration from the brand’s new signature ‘Drive the Change!’.

This approach coincides with the introduction of a new Renault design language that takes its inspiration from the three keywords which communicate the brand’s vision, namely ‘simple’, ‘sensuous’ and ‘warm’.

According to Renault, DeZir’s this design vision also builds on the bonds that are gradually forged between the brand and its customers. The first step, explains the French Carmaker, involves ‘falling in love’, an experience that is illustrated by DeZir’s powerful, sensuous styling and bright red finish; red being the color associated with passion.

DeZir is powered by an electric motor mounted in a mid-rear position to optimize weight distribution over the front and rear wheels.

Today marks the official market launch of Fluence in India, one of the three priority countries in Renault’s international development strategy.

This is the first stage in a five-product product that is scheduled through to the end of the 2012.

Manufactured at the Chennai plant, Fluence is an upmarket model that will be selling through the first fourteen outlets making up Renault’s new Indian network.

Renault’s Indian development initiative began in 2007 and is now picking up speed with a full-scale product offensive: in October, Fluence will be followed by Koleos (also assembled at the Chennai plant, in south-east India). This will be followed by three further models, including an SUV, in 2012.

Renault India Managing Director Marc Nassif commented: “Launch of Fluence in India is the start of a wide-reaching product offensive on one of the markets considered a pillar of Renault’s international development the ‘2016 - Drive the Change’ plan. With the Chennai plant, along with Renault’s engineering, design and logistics centers, plus a dealer network that will number 100 outlets by the end of 2012, Renault is doing everything to offer Indian customers a range of quality vehicles well matched to local market conditions”.

With annual growth of around 20 percent over the last few years, the Indian market is one of the most vigorous in the world. And growth potential is very high.

Renan Livet, marketing manager for the Asia-Africa region notes: “The Indians love technology, ranging from the internet and latest-generation mobile phones to high-tech products of all kinds. Sure, people want affordable cars, but they also want them to bristle with new technologies. So Renault is entering the Indian market from the top end to establish a strong brand image driven by the technological virtues of its best products”.

According to Renault, its Chennai plant spearheads its ambition to conquer the Indian market.

Goodyear Highway Hero

Photo: The Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor Pro-Grade is a tire for heavy-duty pickups, offering a new tread compound and enhanced toughness for those who regularly haul or tow heavy loads.

Goodyear

Founded by Goodyear in 1983, the Highway Hero program recognizes professional truck drivers and the often unnoticed, life-saving rescues and roadside assistance they provide as their jobs take them across North America.

The 28th annual Goodyear North America Highway Hero is an Olympia, Washington truck driver, Tilden Curl, who helped save the lives of two people in a car that had come to a stop on railroad tracks, including pulling the unconscious driver from his car before it was struck by an approaching train. Tilden Curl accepted the 2010 Goodyear North America Highway Hero award from among four finalists.

• Just after noon on October 27, 2010, Curl was driving southbound on Highway 99 near Tulare, California, when a vehicle appeared to lose control and cross traffic, leaving the highway and finally coming to a stop with its front wheels lodged over the railroad tracks that run parallel to the highway. Curl stopped his truck to check on the car and noticed a train was coming. An elderly woman exited the passenger side of the car, and Curl yelled for her to get clear of the tracks. He then noticed that the driver was unconscious and trapped inside. At first, the door couldn’t be opened, but Curl was able to squeeze his arm inside and unlock it. Working quickly, he was able to unfasten the man’s seatbelt and drag him out of the car and away from the area just seconds before the train collided with the stranded vehicle.

“We are grateful to Tilden Curl for his quick thinking and brave actions, which ultimately led two strangers to safety. This is a clear example of the selflessness and professionalism of many of today’s professional truck drivers, who are out on our highways every day to deliver the goods and services upon which we all depend,” said Joseph Copeland, Goodyear’s vice president of commercial tire systems.

“Each of these finalists is a true Highway Hero, and their efforts to help others should be applauded. In honoring Tilden Curl, specifically, we acknowledge that he witnessed a dangerous situation and immediately pulled his truck to a stop as a way to provide help. He then reacted quickly and put himself in harm’s way, in order to help rescue strangers who were in peril. Because of that decision, lives were saved. For this, he has earned the right to be called a hero,” Copeland said.

Benz Patent Motor Car, 1886

Automobile

Photo: Benz Patent Motor Car, 1886 - the world’s first automobile. Photo © Mercedes-Benz, Daimler AG.

On 29 January 1886, Carl Benz files a patent application for his “vehicle with gas engine operation”. Patent application DRP 37,435 can be regarded as the birth certificate of the automobile and helps to coin the name “patent motor car”. The world’s first automobile is an independent design in which engine and chassis form an organic unit. Benz, unconvinced by the conventional drawbar steering used on the carriages of the day, builds his automobile in the form of a three-wheeler. Carl Benz’s key achievement consists in the determination with which he makes reality his vision of the “horseless carriage”: he conceives the idea of a motor car, designs it, constructs it, patents it, tests it, markets it, produces it in series, refines it, thereby making his invention usable. The Benz patent motor car heralds a new age of personal mobility.
