New York: At its meeting in New York on September 7, 2022, the Executive Board of the International Press Institute (IPI) appointed Frane MaroeviÃâ¡ as the organization’s next executive director. He will take over the management of this global network of editors, journalists, and media executives from Barbara Trionfi after she steps down at the beginning of November 2022.
“Today, independent media and journalists are under attack from more directions than ever,” said IPI Executive Board Chair Khadija Patel. “I look forward to working with Frane to strengthen IPI’s support for independent media worldwide. He is committed to defending press freedom and has experience resolving various threats that journalists face today”.
MaroeviÃâ¡ brings to this position over 30 years in journalism, media development, and press freedom. He developed his passion for journalism and learned this profession’s skills, professional standards, and values at the BBC World Service in London. In post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina, he worked on reforming public broadcasting and media regulation and managed donor support for independent media. As the director of the office of the OSCE media freedom representative, he managed responses to numerous cases of media freedom violations in 54 countries that are part of this intergovernmental organization. Before joining IPI, his work at the Internet and Jurisdiction Policy Network and the Freedom Online Coalition Advisory Network focused on threats to online freedom of expression.
“The IPI is the world’s oldest global press freedom organization, and I am deeply honored to have been chosen as its next executive director,” said Frane MaroeviÃâ¡, “Attacks on free media are attacks on our societies. I will work with the IPI Board, team, and members worldwide to improve journalists’ safety and resolve physical, legal, economic, online, and multiple other threats faced by the traditional media and the new media actors. In this time of disinformation and din, we need independent media more than ever to shine a light on our world.
“The strength of IPI is having members across the globe who understand the problems faced by journalists in every corner of the world and can develop local solutions. Moreover, the solidarity of the members and their shared mission ”to defend media freedom and the free flow of news wherever they are threatened” means that they are always ready to support and help each other. Together they are a compelling voice for independent media and press freedom.

New Delhi, India, August 31, 2022 — The Ministry of Culture and Sangeet Natak Akademi, the designated nodal agency for Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), in collaboration with the National Museum and National Museum Institute, organized the celebration of the successful inscription of ‘Durga Puja in Kolkata’ on the Representative List of ICH of Humanity in 2021.
A mesmerizing dance ballet, Devi Rising, was presented by the renowned Odissi dancer and Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Smt. Sharmila Biswas and her troupe from Kolkata. It enthralled the audience and the guests by depicting Devi Durga or the feminine shakti through aesthetically conceptualized choreography, music, costumes, and theme.
Ms. Lily Pandeya, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture; Mr. Tim Curtis, Secretary of UNESCO’s 2003 ICH Convention; Mr. Eric Falt, Director and UNESCO Representative to Bhutan, India, Maldives, and Sri Lanka; Ms. Ritu Sethi, ICH expert; Ms. Shikha Jain & Prof. Manvi Seth, National Museum Institute; Mr. Arvind Kumar, Director/ UNESCO, Ministry of Culture; Mr. Suman Kumar of Sangeet Natak Akademi, and officers from Ministry of External Affairs graced the occasion with their presence.
The Secretary, Convention for Safeguarding the Intangible Culture Heritage, UNESCO, Mr. Tim Curtis, spoke about the developments in UNESCO’s 2003 ICH Convention. He stated that UNESCO will now accept ICH dossiers in the language of the practitioners, along with English or French, for evaluation.
Director and UNESCO Representative to Bhutan, India, Maldives, and Sri Lanka, Eric Falt, said, “I think it is essential to bring together all of the stakeholders and different groups involved in such nominations and this workshop.” He added, “I’m grateful to all of the other partners who have worked with us in the past few years to raise the importance and visibility of intangible cultural heritage.” He also mentioned that UNESCO is organizing an ICH workshop at the regional level in Udaipur, bringing several representatives from various countries.
Joint Secretary Ministry of Culture Ms. Lily Pandeya said, “India is a member of almost all of the UNESCO Cultural Conventions and Programs. In addition, India continues to strengthen the intercultural dialogue among nations with 40 UNESCO World Heritage sites, 14 intangible cultural heritage elements inscribed on Representative List, nine documentary heritage elements recognized in the International Memory of the World Register, and 6 Creative Cities.”
‘Durga Puja in Kolkata’ was inscribed on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity during its 16th session in Paris, France, from 13th to 18th December 2021.

The U.S. Postal Service celebrated the majestic, playful, and highly intelligent elephant with a first-day-of-issue stamp ceremony.
“We love elephants because of their physical characteristics, social intelligence, capacity for empathy, self-awareness, teamwork, and because they share so many of our best qualities,” said Jeffery Adams, USPS corporate communications vice president, who served as the dedicated official. “What a pleasure it is to honor these magnificent creatures on World Elephant Day with a beautiful Forever stamp.”
According to USPS, the stamp’s fanciful digital illustration of an elephant and its young calf depicts the affectionate nature of the beloved animals. Two stylized plants and a bright orange sun add whimsy and color to this lighthearted stamp. In the upper left-hand corner, the word “Forever” is in black, and the letters “USA” are in gray. The booklet cover details the adult elephant, with a green plant and orange sun to the left. Artis Rafael López created the original art and designed the stamp.

The U.S. Postal Service is dedicating a new Christmas stamp featuring “Virgin and Child,” an oil-on-panel painting from the first half of the 16th century by an unidentified Florentine artist known as “the Master of Scandicci Lamentation.”
“The painting depicts the Virgin Mary gazing downward at the infant Christ, one of her arms holding him protectively at his waist, the other tenderly touching his arm, while the Christ child turns his head to look out of the frame to the left,” USPS explained.
The 16th-century painting “Virgin and Child” is part of the Robert Dawson Evans Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Art director Greg Breeding designed the stamp.

CHANDIGARH, India, August 13, 2022 — Chandigarh University on Saturday created the Guinness World Record to form ‘World’s Largest Human Image of a Waving National Flag.’ As many as 5885 students from Chandigarh University and other schools and colleges, volunteers of the NID Foundation, and other dignitaries gathered for the flag formation at Chandigarh Cricket Stadium. They created history in the heart of the City Beautiful.
More than 25,000 people, including youth and citizens of Chandigarh, filled the air with patriotism. The attendees included Punjab Governor and Chandigarh UT Administrator Shri Banwarilal Purohit, Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture Smt Meenakshi Lekhi, NID Chief Patron and Chandigarh University Chancellor S. Satnam Singh Sandhu, Dharam Pal, Adviser to the Administrator, Chandigarh UT; Vinay Pratap Singh, Deputy Commissioner Chandigarh; Sarabjit Kaur, Mayor Chandigarh; Parveer Ranjan, DGP Chandigarh UT, Prof Himani Sood, Founder NID Foundation and other top officials of the UT administration.
Swapnil Dangarikar, official Guinness World Records Adjudicator, who was present at the event, verified the record. “The previous world record for the largest human image of a waving national flag achieved by GEMS Education in Abu Dhabi, UAE, has been broken. Chandigarh University has created a new world record in today’s event,” he confirmed.
Mr. Dangarikar also handed over a copy of the GWR certificate to Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shri Banwarilal Purohit and S. Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chief Patron, NID Foundation, and Chancellor, Chandigarh University, and congratulated them.
Shri Banwarilal Purohit said that with the successful creation of the world record formed by Chandigarh University, Chandigarh had given a great message to the entire world on the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence Day.
S. Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chief Patron, NID Foundation, and Chancellor Chandigarh University, congratulated all the participants and said that the historical formation of the national flag aptly celebrates the spirit of India’s 75th Independence Day under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
The joys and excitements of those in attendance knew no bounds as they breathed in patriotism. Sunil Sharma, a student of Chandigarh University, said that he was proud that his university organized such a significant event and made a world record. “I am proud that I am a part of this historic event, celebrating the independence of a land that has given us a unique identity and associated with proud heritage and values,” he said.
The event concluded with flag hoisting and singing the national anthem.

WASHINGTON, August 11, 2022 — Jen Judson, President of the National Press Club, has announced the winners of the prestigious National Press Club Journalism Awards. The investigative powerhouse ProPublica won one award for consumer journalism and helped two other organizations win prizes in the National Press Club journalism contest.
PBS/Frontline won two awards - including an Arthur Rowse award for coverage of Filipino journalist Maria Ressa and her staff in the run-up to an election in the Philippines. In addition, PBS/Frontline won an Edwin M. Hood award in a joint effort with ProPublica called ‘Massacre in El Salvador.’
National Public Radio’s, All Things Considered won breaking news for its coverage of the January 6 riot at the Capitol.
The Miami Herald won consumer journalism newspapers in a partnership with ProPublica. ProPublica won for its investigation of the nation’s food safety system.
Several of the winners focused on issues related to the 2020 elections. J. Scott Applewhite of The Associated Press won for his dramatic photographs of the January 6 riot at the Capitol. Jen Wieczner of Fortune Media won the Lee Walczak award for ‘Dominion Voting: Big Lies vs. Big Lawsuits.’
A new category this year is the Nell Minow Award for Cultural Criticism, won by the Los Angeles Times for its close look at the Latino ‘cultural zeitgeist.’
National Press Club will hold the award dinner on Wednesday, August 31. The event will start at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31, starting with a reception in the Holeman Lounge, followed at 7 p.m. with dinner and a program in the ballroom.
The event will also honor the late Al Jazeera Correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh with the 2022 President’s Award. The President’s award is given at the discretion of the President of the National Press Club.

NEW YORK, August 11, 2022 — International advocacy organization Global Citizen has announced the lineups for the 10th anniversary Global Citizen Festival. The festival will occur in New York City’s Central Park, presented by Citi and Cisco, and Black Star Square in Accra, Ghana, presented by Harith General Partners, on Saturday, September 24, 2022.
Since it lit up Central Park’s Great Lawn in 2012, the Global Citizen Festival has become the world’s longest-running global campaign calling for an end to extreme poverty. The event unites millions of voices, amplified by the world’s most prominent artists, demanding world leaders take action NOW.
Globally, the disproportionate impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has pushed nearly 100 million more people into extreme poverty and is reversing recent trends of shrinking inequality, leading to the loss of at least three years of progress. Without urgent action, this backsliding will only worsen, the organization said. In addition, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has aggravated the situation further, with as many as 323 million people facing acute hunger and 1.2 billion people currently living in nations experiencing a perfect storm of food, energy, and financial crises. If we don’t take action now, as many as 200 million more people may be plunged into extreme poverty by November, Global Citizen warned.
The 2022 Global Citizen Festival will call on world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly and the G20 and COP27 to step up and invest $600 million. The investment will go into the future of women and girls, close the annual $10 billion climate financing shortfall, deliver $500 million to help African farmers respond to the global food crisis, and provide urgent relief from crushing debts to End Extreme Poverty.
With two stages in international cultural capitals, New York City and Accra, Ghana, the 2022 Global Citizen Festival will be broadcast and streamed on ABC, ABC News Live, FX, Hulu, iHeartRadio, TimesLIVE, Twitter, YouTube, and more. ABC News Live’s broadcast will air on Saturday, September 24, and a primetime special, Global Citizen Festival: Take Action NOW, will air on ABC on Sunday, September 25 at 7:00 pm ET / 6:00 pm CT. Performers on the Central Park stage will include Metallica, Charlie Puth, Jonas Brothers, MÃâ¦NESKIN, Mariah Carey, Mickey Guyton, and RosalÃÂa, with more to be announced. Chennai, July 28, 2022 — The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, declared open the 44th Chess Olympiad at JLN Indoor Stadium, Chennai, today.
The Prime Minister welcomed all the players and chess lovers from all over the world to India. He noted the significance of the time of the event as it falls during the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.’ He added that the most prestigious tournament in chess has come to India, the home of chess.
The Prime Minister noted that the 44th Chess Olympiad had been a tournament of many firsts and records. It is the first time the Chess Olympiad is taking place at the origin of chess, India.
The Prime Minister said that sport is beautiful because it has the inherent power to unite. Sports bring people and societies closer. Sports nurture a spirit of teamwork.
The Prime Minister remarked that in sports, there are no losers. There are winners, and there are future winners. He wished all the teams and players success in the 44th Chess Olympiad.
Earlier, the Prime Minister had launched the first-ever Chess Olympiad Torch Relay at the Indira Gandhi National Stadium in New Delhi on June 19, 2022. The torch traveled to 75 iconic locations in the country for over 40 days, traversing close to 20,000 kilometers and culminating in Mahabalipuram, before heading to the FIDE Headquarters, Switzerland.
The 44th Chess Olympiad takes place in Chennai from July 28 to August 9, 2022. The prestigious competition, organized since 1927, is being hosted in India for the first time and in Asia after 30 years. With 187 countries participating, this will be the most extensive participation in any Chess Olympiad. India is also fielding its most significant contingent comprising 30 players across six teams in the competition.

Team of global sports executives partners with Hall of Fame Baseball Icons Mariano Rivera and Barry Larkin to launch a league in Dubai.
NEW YORK and DUBAI, UAE, July 25, 2022 — The United International Baseball League (UIBL) announced today its plan to bring professional baseball to India, Pakistan, and the Middle East, beginning with an Inaugural Showcase that will take place in Dubai in February 2023. In addition, the UIBL has partnered with Hall of Fame baseball legends Mariano Rivera and Barry Larkin to help build, develop and grow the league. They are two of the sport’s most iconic and decorated stars, with a combined six World Series Championships and 25 All-Star Game selections.
The Indian Subcontinent and the Middle East region are home to two billion people. More than 900 million people are fans of cricket - the world’s most popular bat and ball sport. Yet, while baseball exists in small pockets across South Asia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, there is an absence of professional leagues and a void of deep, grassroots player development expertise and infrastructure. The UIBL team is looking to change that.
“I’m very grateful to be a part of the UIBL’s exciting mission to inspire two billion new fans to fall in love with baseball,” said Rivera. American baseball is a $13 billion business with nearly 100 million fans across the U.S. and Canada and a rabid following throughout Latin America. However, the game has yet to connect with South Asian and Middle Eastern sports fans, who collectively represent the world’s most extensive cricket fan base. For example, more than 167 million South Asia watched the International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 World Cup last year - 70 million more than the Super Bowl and over 150 million more than the World Series.

Washington, DC, July 26, 2022 — IMF today published its World Economic Outlook for July 2022. The outlook for global growth has grown “gloomy and more uncertain,” the IMF’s chief economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas warned.
Increasingly gloomy developments followed tentative recovery in 2021 in 2022 as risks began to materialize. Global output contracted in the second quarter of this year, owing to downturns in China and Russia, while US consumer spending undershot expectations. In addition, several shocks have hit a world economy already weakened by the pandemic: higher-than-expected inflation worldwide—especially in the United States and major European economies—triggering tighter financial conditions; a worse-than-anticipated slowdown in China, reflecting COVID- 19 outbreaks and lockdowns; and further negative spillovers from the war in Ukraine.
“The outlook has darkened significantly since April. The world may soon be teetering on the edge of a global recession, only two years after the last one. Multilateral cooperation will be key in many areas, from climate transition and pandemic preparedness to food security and debt distress. Amid great challenge and strife, strengthening cooperation remains the best way to improve economic prospects for all and mitigate the risk of geo-economic fragmentation,” Gourinchas said at the launch of the quarterly update of the IMF’s World Economic Outlook report.
The Fund is warning that elevated inflation, rising interest rates, a high US dollar valuation, the impact of the war in Ukraine, and a slowdown in Chinese growth are all factors leading to a downward revision in the forecast.
“In particular, a full shutdown of Russian gas flows to Europe or inflation pressures remaining more elevated than they’ve been in the past. And we’ve been repeatedly surprised by the persistence and the broadening of inflation in recent times and an increase in financial tightening around the world. And so if you put all these things together, we get a global economy, as I mentioned in my remarks, that gets close to 2% in 2023, where we think a lot of the vulnerabilities are where you have a lot of slowdown happening. And so 2% is a low number for the global economy. So that’s a sense in which we’re getting close, really close to a global recession,” he explained.
Persistent high inflation in the US and other big economies is leading central banks to hike interest rates. Meanwhile, there is a move to the safety of the US dollar, which means that emerging markets are especially hit with higher prices while also seeing the cost of servicing their debt increase. As a result, the temptation will be to push off reforms or to raise spending, but the Fund says that action now will head off more pain later.
“What is important here is that, in a sense, there is one overwhelming priority at this point: to bring back price stability in advanced economies and emerging markets. Many of them have seen elevated price pressure, whether we are in the baseline or whether we are in the alternative scenario. And in the alternative scenario, inflation pressures are pushing even higher, and there’s even more of a need for central banks and policymakers to address that issue. And this is critical because it’s necessary to plant the seed for future macroeconomic stability. So a stable macroeconomic environment requires that we bring down inflation in the coming year, year-and-a-half,” he answered.
Gourinchas also said there is still a path to a ‘soft landing’ in the US, meaning that the Federal Reserve can head off a recession through calibrated action.
“The current environment suggests that the likelihood that the US economy can avoid a recession is quite narrow. Under our current projections, for instance, for the US, the quarter… Q4 on Q4 growth rate in 2023 is only 0.6%. And 0.6%, that’s under our baseline. So you see, a small shock at this point could be enough to sort of knock off the US economy of a fairly low number and tilt it into recession. So it’s a very narrow, it’s a very narrow path at this point,” Gourinchas remarked.

Geneva, July 23, 2022: WIPO Director General Daren Tang opened the WIPO Assemblies with a call for delegates to keep working to transform intellectual property (IP) into a powerful catalyst for jobs, investments, business growth, and economic development.
Some 900 delegates from WIPO’s 193 Member States registered for in-person participation at the July 14-22, 2022, Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO. It was the most significant number of registrants for a WIPO Assemblies meeting since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
“The invasion of Ukraine. Global inflation. Disruptions to food and energy supply chains. Our global situation remains extremely challenging. But despite these challenges, we cannot look back or stop our work of building the future of the global IP ecosystem,” said Director General Tang in welcoming the delegates.
“We as the global IP community must continue being fully committed to transforming IP from a technical vertical of interest only to specialists into a powerful catalyst for jobs, investments, and development that supports innovators and creators everywhere.”
Cabo Verde Prime Minister José Ulisses Correia e Silva and Colombia President Iván Duque joined Mr. Tang in welcoming delegates to the WIPO Assemblies.
Later, in the meetings, delegates considered the work of WIPO against the backdrop of solid growth in IP and innovation-related activities, as well as the increasing globalization of IP.
The Director General cited continued growth in IP filings, with international patent, trademark, and design applications filed via WIPO reaching record levels in 2021.
“IP continues to move from the periphery to the center, as businesses and economies use the crisis as an opportunity to reimagine, restructure and rebuild, using innovation and creativity as engines of growth,” Mr. Tang said.
Mr. Tang also noted WIPO’s strong financial position, with a surplus of nearly 245 million Swiss Francs for the 2020/21 biennium. “This puts us in a good position to invest these surpluses into capabilities, tools, and projects to continue supporting you strongly, even as the overall financial and macro-economic environment remains volatile and challenging,” he said.
On Tuesday, July 19, WIPO presented the first round of five winners of its new Global Awards program, recognizing exceptional enterprises and individuals using intellectual property to impact home and abroad positively.
A group of seven eminent jurors worldwide selected the winners from 272 submissions spanning 62 countries. The 2022 Global Awards focused on small and medium-sized enterprises, which constitute the backbone of the worldwide economy. The Global Awards program in subsequent years will vary and concentrate on different groups, including youth and women.
In his address, Mr. Tang gave delegates an overview of developments of the Organization’s new Medium-Term Strategic Plan 2022-26, which Member States had endorsed during the 2021 WIPO Assemblies.
“Our focus since then has been simple and single-minded - to translate them into concrete plans and actions to deliver the results and impact that you expect,” Mr. Tang told delegates.
He said that work had advanced in four key areas: Demystifying IP for people everywhere through new ways of engagement; bringing the global IP community together to share ideas, shape practices, and solve global challenges; providing services, data and knowledge to help business owners and policy-makers; and delivering impactful and concrete projects on the ground that allow innovators and creators to use IP for growth.
“Whatever our challenges and difficulties, the global IP community can and should draw on the dynamism, energy, and optimism of the innovators and creators that we support and continue on the transformation journey that we have started together,” Mr. Tang said in concluding his remarks.
Tatiana Molcean, Moldova’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, chaired the WIPO General Assembly.

LONDON, July 22, 2022 — Passport holders with the most extraordinary global access are currently the most restricted and reluctant to enjoy their travel freedom, according to the latest results from the Henley Passport Index. Japan holds the number one spot on the index. The index comprises the actual ranking of all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations they can access without a prior visa. Japan has a record-high visa-free or visa-on-arrival score of 193, while Singapore and South Korea come in joint-2nd place, with a score of 192.
But despite the record-breaking worldwide access afforded to citizens of these three nations over the index’s 17-year history, international passenger demand in the Asia-Pacific region has only reached 17% of pre-Covid levels, hovering below 10% for most of the past two years. This figure is far behind the global trend, where markets in Europe and North America have recovered to around 60% of pre-crisis travel mobility levels. However, Dr. Marie Owens Thomsen, Chief Economist at IATA (International Air Transport Association), says passenger numbers should reach 83% of pre-pandemic levels in 2022. “By next year, many markets should see traffic reach or exceed pre-pandemic levels, while we expect this to be the case for the industry in 2024.”
EU member states dominate the remaining top 10 ten spots on the latest ranking, with Germany and Spain in joint-3rd place, with access to 190 destinations visa-free. Finland, Italy, and Luxembourg follow closely behind in joint-4th place with 189 goals. Denmark, Netherlands, and Sweden share 5th place with their passport holders able to travel to 188 destinations worldwide without a visa. The UK and US have dropped down a rank to 6th and 7th place, respectively. Afghanistan remains at the bottom of the index, with its nationals only able to access 27 destinations worldwide visa-free. The global mobility gap between the world’s most and least powerful passports now sits at an unprecedented 166 destinations.
Russian passport holders are more cut off from the rest of the world than ever, as sanctions imposed ban travel and airspace closures limit Russian citizens from accessing all but a few destinations in Central Asia and the Middle East. The Russian passport currently sits at 50th place on the index, with a visa-free or visa-free on arrival score of 119. However, due to airspace closures in EU member nations, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, the US, and the UK, Russian citizens are effectively barred from traveling most of the world. Notable exceptions are Istanbul and Dubai, which have become focal transit points.
Conversely, the Ukrainian passport is in 35th place on the index, with holders able to access 144 destinations worldwide without needing a visa in advance.
⢠UAE is the clear pandemic winner.
Throughout the turmoil of the past two years, one thing has remained constant: the growing strength of the UAE passport, which now sits at 15th place on the ranking. It has a visa-free or visa-on-arrival score of 176.
⢠Peaceful countries have more powerful passports.
Unique research conducted by Henley & Partners comparing a country’s visa-free access with its Global Peace Index score shows a strong correlation between a nation’s passport power and peacefulness. Any country in the top ten of the Henley Passport Index is also in the top ten of the Global Peace Index. So is the case for the bottom-ranking nations.
Commenting on the results in the Henley Global Mobility Report 2022 Q3, Stephen Klimczuk-Massion, Quondam Fellow of Oxford University’s Saïd Business School, says: “Your passport is more than ever a calling card, which, depending on which passport you carry and where you are going, will have an impact on the kind of welcome you will receive, where you can go and how safe you will be when you get there. Now more than ever, it’s a mistake to think of a passport as merely a travel document that allows you to get from A to B. On the contrary, the relative strength or weakness of a particular national passport directly affects the quality of life of the passport holder.”

CHANDIGARH, India, July 21, 2022 — “Adding another jewel to its star-studded crown, Chandigarh University has secured 29th spot among all the public and private universities of the country in the NIRF Rankings 2022. Thus, it has become the youngest University to enter the top-30 league of Indian Universities,” said S. Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chancellor, Chandigarh University.
“CU is not only the youngest but also the only University in the country to give consistently great performances in National and International rankings. These include QS World, QS Asia, NIRF, and NAAC. Moreover, it is improving its position yearly,” said Sandhu.
“Our institution has bagged the second position among all universities and first among private universities in Punjab and Tricity in the NIRF rankings,” Mr. Sandhu stated.
“This stellar performance of Chandigarh University in the NIRF rankings is a reflection of the Varsity’s academic excellence and industry-training prowess from all stakeholders including industry, government, and most importantly the students,” he added.
Presenting an analysis of the NIRF rankings, Sandhu informed that Chandigarh University had secured an overall 3rd position among all engineering institutions and 2nd position among all private engineering institutions in Punjab and Tricity, and the first spot amongst all private engineering institutions in Punjab. In addition, it has bagged the 45th spot among all engineering universities and colleges in the country.
“Even in Management, we have secured the 40th position among the country’s institutions while securing the second spot among all public and private institutions in Punjab and Tricity. In Architecture, we have bagged 19th position among all institutions of the country while securing the second spot among all public and private institutions in Punjab and Tricity,” he explained.
“We have filed 1816 patents so far and are the leading stand-alone institution to file the highest number of patents in the last three years, and we have academic tie-ups with 450 international universities in more than 80 countries,” Mr. Sandhu stated.
“With our excellent performance in many spheres, we have become the youngest University to debut into QS World University Rankings-2023 and have secured a place among the top 800 institutions worldwide. Among all Indian Universities, Chandigarh University has grabbed an incredible overall 21st position, an impressive third position among Private Universities, and the first spot in the Punjab-Chandigarh region,” the CU Chancellor elaborated

Paris, July 20, 2022: Following the evaluation of the World Book Capital Advisory Committee, the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has designated Strasbourg (France) as World Book Capital for 2024.
“In uncertain times, many turn to books as a refuge and a source of dreams. Indeed, books have the unique ability both to entertain and to teach. Therefore, we must ensure everyone can access knowledge and reflection through books and reading. Each year UNESCO designates a world book capital. After Guadalajara in 2022 and Accra in 2023, I am pleased to declare the designation of Strasbourg as World Book Capital for 2024,” UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay announced.
UNESCO and the World Book Capital Advisory Committee were impressed by Strasbourg’s strong focus on books to meet the challenges of social tensions and climate change, with programs like ‘Reading for the Planet.’ In addition, the city emphasizes books’ ability to encourage debate and discussion of environmental concerns and scientific knowledge, focusing on young people as change agents.
Strasbourg also got commended for its literary heritage and organized activities, highlighting many artistic disciplines, from music to theatre and illustration. In addition, the city has significant experience in organizing large-scale outward-looking events.
The celebrations will start on April 23, 2024, on World Book and Copyright Day.

WASHINGTON, July 17, 2022: The U.S. Postal Service will commemorate the heyday of the pony car era with five new stamps featuring some of the most famous examples of these youth-oriented vehicles.
The first-day-of-issue event for the Pony Cars Forever stamp will take place on August 25, 2022, at the Great American Stamp Show in partnership with the American Philatelic Society. The ceremony is free and open to the public.
In the 1960s, a new vehicle breed began appearing on U.S. roads. Over the past six decades, fast and fun pony cars have become a uniquely American obsession. Since their emergence, these performance coupes and convertibles have brought a youthful spirit to the automotive world.
In the mid-to-late 20th century, American automakers began catering to a segment of their customer base that was rapidly growing — younger drivers. These drivers craved sporty, affordable cars that looked and felt different from what was in their parents’ garages. Several manufacturers initially produced models that fit that description, but the pony car trend did not begin in earnest until 1964.
By the 1970s energy crisis, sales of the once ubiquitous pony cars had begun to decline. But by the end of the decade, the cars had a resurgence. In addition, pony cars were cultural icons; throughout the 1970s, they appeared in many television shows and movies.
Since then, the popularity of pony cars has ebbed and flowed. But over the past two decades, automakers have reintroduced many of the beloved models first launched in the genre’s heyday. So today, adventurous drivers enjoy the thrill of driving pony cars.
