HOLYOKE, Mass., December 17, 2021 — Hyundai celebrates one of its early IONIQ 5 electric cross-over utility vehicle buyers, Ms. Sandra Bergland of Boston, Mass. Ms. Bergland purchased a 2022 IONIQ 5 Limited AWD in the Digital Teal exterior finish. Coming from a family of early adopters of electric vehicles, Ms. Bergland was drawn to the IONIQ 5’s driving range and ultra-fast charging coupled with Hyundai’s new Electric-Global Modular Platform that allows for more interior space and optimized performance. In addition, IONIQ 5’s progressive design represents a departure from past norms, exploring new design freedom.

“As a captain for a major cargo airline flying large freighter planes, I am immersed in technology and how it’s reshaped the industry. The IONIQ 5 is the perfect vehicle for me. I appreciate its progressive aerodynamic exterior design with a spacious and smart interior, innovative connectivity, and advanced technologies; it’s redefining the industry and providing new choices for customers like me. After the wait, I’m thrilled to be among the first to drive the IONIQ 5 and embark on road trips that complement my active lifestyle without the need to stop at gas stations.” said Ms. Bergland.

Sandra Bergland is a captain for a major cargo airline based in the United States, flying one of the giant freight airplanes in the industry. When not flying to Europe and Asia, Ms. Bergland enjoys spending time with her family and skiing in Park City, Utah. The IONIQ 5’s flexible and intelligent interior design and towing capability are perfect for carrying ski equipment and providing the extra space her two dogs will enjoy. The ultra-fast charging and impressive driving range are key attributes as she plans to drive the IONIQ 5 from the Berkshires in Massachusetts to Park City, Utah, next year. Sandra Bergland comes from a family of early EV adopters, including her brother, who currently owns a 2019 IONIQ EV. Hyundai plans to work with Ms. Bergland to chronicle her first year driving the IONIQ 5 and share this journey via social media platforms.

TIME Names the 2021 Person of the Year: Elon Musk

TIME, EON MUSK

NEW YORK, December 13, 2021 — Today, TIME named Elon Musk the 2021 Person of the Year.

TIME Editor-in-Chief and CEO Edward Felsenthal write, “Person of the Year is a marker of influence, and few individuals have had more influence than Musk on life on Earth, and potentially life off Earth too. In 2021, Musk emerged not just as the world’s richest person but also as perhaps the richest example of a massive shift in our society.”

Felsenthal continues, “Musk’s rise coincides with broader trends of which he and his fellow technology magnates are part cause and part effect: the continuing decline of traditional institutions in favor of individuals; government dysfunction that has delivered more power and responsibility to business; and chasms of wealth and opportunity. In an earlier era, ambitions on the scale of interplanetary travel were the ultimate collective undertaking, around which Presidents rallied nations….For creating solutions to an existential crisis, for embodying the possibilities and the perils of the age of tech titans, for driving society’s most daring and disruptive transformations, Elon Musk is TIME’s 2021 Person of the Year.”

In his letter to readers, Felsenthal writes, ” Elon Musk’s spacefaring adventures are a direct line from the very first Person of the Year, Charles Lindbergh, whom the editors selected in 1927 to commemorate his historic first solo transatlantic airplane flight over the Atlantic. For us at TIME, it has also been a year of building on the past to forge the future.”

In the cover story, which includes an exclusive interview with Musk, TIME’s Molly Ball, Jeffrey Kluger, and Alejandro de la Garza, write, “His startup rocket company, SpaceX, has leapfrogged Boeing and others to own America’s spacefaring future. His car company, Tesla, controls two-thirds of the multibillion-dollar electric-vehicle market it pioneered and is valued at a cool $1 trillion. That has made Musk, with a net worth of more than $250 billion, the richest private citizen in history, at least on paper. In addition, he’s a player in robots and solar, cryptocurrency and climate, brain-computer implants to stave off the menace of artificial intelligence and underground tunnels to move people and freight at super speeds.”

The December 27, 2021 - January 3, 2022, Person of the Year issue of TIME goes on sale on Friday, December 17.

Autonomous Car arrives at Florida Poly for Enhance Research.

LAKELAND, Fla., December 2, 2021 — Researchers at Florida Polytechnic University’s Advanced Mobility Institute are beginning a new phase in their work on autonomous vehicle testing and verification. The research is shifting gears from software to hardware testing at a new simulation facility on campus, funded in part by a $350,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.

The project’s centerpiece - a tricked-out, autonomous sedan - recently arrived at Florida Poly. The car is equipped with sophisticated electronics and transformed into a drive-by-wire autonomous test vehicle.

“Drive-by-wire means you can control the steering, acceleration, braking by electronic signals,” said Dr. Onur Toker, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and researcher. “If you put a computer in it, it becomes an autonomous vehicle test car.”

The researchers will put the autonomous car to work on Polytechnic Circle, the road encircling campus.

“Autonomous vehicles have computer systems that you can think of like a child - it needs time to mature, grow, and learn,” said Dr. AJ Alnaser, assistant professor of applied mathematics and researcher. “Once it learns enough, we have to test it. Then, finally, we have to be able to trust that we can give it a driver’s license and it can drive safely.”

Researchers can emulate driving conditions inside the new simulation lab and test whether a car’s programming is accurate. The lab’s equipment includes advanced computers connected to two lifelike driving simulators, complete with racing seats, steering wheels, pedals, and large monitor screens.

Alnaser said testing and verifying connected autonomous vehicle (CAV) technology is a vast, multidisciplinary industry problem.

“We want to define what’s a safety measure for cars and then go after how to make conditions as dangerous as possible in a simulation platform,” Alnaser said. “It’s cheaper and safer.”

Dr. Arman Sargolzaei, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Tennessee Technological University, is working with Florida Poly researchers on the project.

“CAVs will be used in the future to transfer people and goods, and we need to make sure this technology is ready and safe in advance,” said Sargolzaei. “This new facility at Florida Poly allows researchers to develop, implement, and test their algorithms in realistic and safe environments.”

November 27, 2021 - Euro NCAP has published the Assisted Driving gradings of seven cars equipped with Highway Assist. The overall best performer in this batch is the BMW iX3, graded as ‘Very Good.’ Two others - the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the CUPRA Formentor - achieve ‘Good’ gradings. The assist systems of the Polestar 2 and the Hyundai IONIQ 5 are graded as ‘Moderate,’ while the Toyota Yaris and Opel Mokka-e offer ‘Entry’ level systems.

Highway Assist systems help the driver to maintain a steady speed, to keep a safe distance from the car in front, and to keep the vehicle in the center of the lane by combining (intelligent) Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Lane Centering (LC). Highway Assist systems are designed to assist the driver, not to take control, and the driver is expected to keep his hands on the wheel and his eyes on the road at all times. For this reason, Euro NCAP tests the car’s ability to assist and promote safer driving and evaluate how the system engages the driver and, if the unexpected happens, what safety backup is offered by the vehicle.

First offered on premium vehicles, the technology has gone mainstream in recent years and is now available on cars in all categories, albeit with varying degrees of sophistication and different price points. In its previous rounds of Assisted Driving tests in 2018 and 2020, Euro NCAP found some vehicles promised more than they could deliver, implying that they provide more automation than they were capable of doing through their naming and interaction with the driver. However, all the cars tested in this round offer a balance between Assistance Competence - the degree to which the system can help the driver - and Driver Engagement - the extent to which the driver feels they must remain in control and not disengage from the driving task.

Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary-General of Euro NCAP, says, “This balance between assistance and engagement is crucial. Cars are not yet capable of fully automated driving and should not mislead drivers into thinking that they are. Reports from America have highlighted the severe problems when people have an unrealistically high expectation of what such systems can offer and when the car they are driving does not actively try to get them back in the loop. We are pleased that the manufacturers represented in this round of tests make clear the level of support that they can provide.”

The range of cars tested demonstrated the growing prevalence of Assisted Driving across the spectrum of vehicle categories. While offering less functionality than more sophisticated systems, entry-level systems nevertheless provide the driver with a practical level of support. Moreover, the fact that they are fitted on volume-selling cars shows the direction of travel for automated driving.

Euro NCAP said its tests follow a rapidly changing legislative background. Technology is developing very quickly, and the degree of automation allowed and what action the car must take when, for example, handing control back to an unresponsive driver, is being reviewed. Euro NCAP’s future tests will take these regulatory changes into account.

Euro NCAP organizes crash & safety tests on new vehicles and provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe. Established in 1997 and backed by several European Governments, motoring, consumer, and insurance organizations, Euro NCAP has rapidly become a catalyst for encouraging significant safety improvements to new car design.

Super AVI, the newest watch series from Breitling, is a celebration of aviation history with designs inspired by the original 1953 “Co-Pilot” Ref. 765 AVI aviator’s watch and four legendary planes: the North American Aviation P-51 Mustang, the Vought F4U Corsair, the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, and the de Havilland Mosquito.

“This collection embodies that sense of nostalgia for the early days of aviation when pilots relied on their watches as onboard tools,” says Breitling CEO Georges Kern. “But you don’t have to be a pilot or vintage-aircraft buff to appreciate the exceptional craftsmanship and rugged design.”

That pioneering watch is the inspiration for today’s Super AVI, the debut series in Breitling’s Classic AVI collection. Its launch marks nearly a century of aviation timepieces from a brand that has shared some of the field’s finest moments. From brave first takeoffs to the birth of commercial air travel, Breitling’s history is inseparable from that of flight.

• Drawn from Vintage Aviation Aesthetic

The collection comes in five unique versions honoring four powerful and memorable aircraft, whose filigree silhouettes adorn the watches’ sapphire case backs.

“Our watchmaking DNA is what dominates here, while the interpretations of the four aircraft give the series its emotion and bold graphic appeal. These elements evoke the spirit of early flight,” says Breitling Creative Director Sylvain Berneron. “We can’t forget that Breitling pioneered aviation tool watches like the Ref. 765 AVI. That heritage is so strong; we had not only to keep it intact but rewrite it for the 21st century.”

Glasgow, United Kingdom, 4 November 2021 — Roughly half of the emission reductions needed to reach the 2050 climate goals rely on technologies in early development, demonstration, or prototype phases. Accelerating innovation in this decade is critical to bringing these technologies to market and making them cost-competitive.

To jumpstart this effort, the World Economic Forum, in partnership with US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, announced the First Movers Coalition - a new platform for companies to make purchasing commitments that create new market demand for low carbon technologies.

The commitments aim to be collectively significant enough to commercialize decarbonization technologies. The First Movers Coalition will create a long-term impact by driving milestones this decade through investment into these technological solutions.

It will work across eight key sectors. Seven of these sectors — steel, cement, aluminum, chemicals, shipping, aviation, and trucking—account for more than a third of global carbon emissions but do not have cost-competitive clean energy alternatives to fossil fuels. Direct air capture could reduce atmospheric carbon-dioxide levels to help achieve net-zero global emissions and require technological innovation to reach commercial viability.

The First Movers Coalition provides opportunities for a wide range of companies to make commitments, take action and build the clean and profitable supply chains of the future. It also brings together a range of civil society and expert organizations to build momentum, complement ongoing efforts, and input into the initiative’s design.

Børge Brende, President of the World Economic Forum, said: “Technology has given us the tools to reduce our emissions and build a more robust and more inclusive economy of the future. However, for innovators and investors to tackle the climate crisis, they need apparent market demand. The First Movers Coalition will leverage the collective purchasing power of leading companies and drive the need for these technologies. I call on business leaders to work with us and be the role models keeping our climate goals alive.

John Kerry, US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, said: “The First Movers Coalition is a platform for the world’s leading global companies to make purchasing commitments to create early markets for critical technologies needed to achieve net-zero by 2050. In this critical decade, we not only need to deploy as rapidly as possible existing clean energy technologies, such as wind turbines, solar panels, and battery storage but also drive innovation for our long-term decarbonization goals.”

Phase 1 commitments launched.

These commitments target new technologies and create a market by 2030 to achieve decarbonization in 2050. Founding members have made commitments in at least one of these sectors.

• Aviation:

• Shipping: Members commit to using zero-emission fuels in new and retrofitted zero-emission vessels by 2030.

• Trucking: Members commit to purchase or contract zero-emission medium and heavy-duty vehicles by 2030. These can include battery or fuel-cell electric vehicles and incorporate renewable sources of electricity and hydrogen for charging. Trucking owners and operators also set a target that at least 30% of their heavy-duty and 100% of their medium-duty truck purchases will be zero-emission trucks by 2030. In addition, retailers & manufacturers set a target to require all of their trucking service providers to meet the trucking owners and operators’ commitment by 2030.

• Steel: Members commit to purchasing volumes of near-zero-emissions steel by 2030. The deployment of breakthrough iron and steelmaking technology is needed to deliver a net-zero steel sector with minimal residual emissions. These technologies include direct hydrogen reduction, carbon capture use and storage, and electrolysis-based production processes. Steel purchasers set a target that at least 10% of their annual steel procurement volumes by 2030 meet or exceed the First Movers Coalition definition for near-zero emissions steel.

The remaining sectoral commitments will launch in early 2022.

Approximately 6,500 photo entries from 41 countries were submitted depicting this year’s theme of ‘New Adventure.’ The diverse and extraordinary images will be presented at an exclusive exhibition in December.

We are very honored to receive these incredible artworks and to share them with the world,” said Oscar Lin, General Manager of the Monitor Business Unit at ViewSonic. “The ColorPro Awards were born following ColorPro’s vision. It was to celebrate creators and their inspirations. And as seen through their lenses, this contest captured this spirit through adventure in all its forms.”

As a natural transition, this year’s theme seeks to portray the sense of adventure as the world starts to reopen. In contrast, the last year’s theme centered on the global act of kindness in times of adversity. NEW YORK, NY, November 1, 2021 - The Miss Universe Organization, the Israeli Ministry of Tourism, and the city of Eilat today announced that the 70th MISS UNIVERSE competition would air live from Eilat, Israel, on December 12, 2021, at 7 PM EST. Israeli singer and international star Noa Kirel will perform at the competition.

“I’m so excited and honored to be performing at Miss Universe,” said Kirel. “By believing in themselves and fearlessly chasing their dreams, these women from around the world live and breathe the values of the Miss Universe Organization, and I can’t wait to share this celebratory moment with all of them on this incredible global stage.”

This year’s competition will also feature two other contestants from the region: Miss Universe United Arab Emirates and Miss Universe Morocco. This will mark the first time a delegate from the United Arab Emirates has participated. Additionally, Miss Universe Morocco returns to the competition for the first time in over four decades.

“Despite the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic placed in our path, we knew how to maintain the balance between health and the economy, to bring tourism back to Israel,” said Israeli Tourism Minister Yoel Razvozov. “We needed to create tourism anchors that will promote and present Israel to the world as a vaccination nation that invites tourists to visit. The Miss Universe pageant is, without doubt, a significant anchor of this plan.”

The organization also unveiled details for the competition’s venue, a state-of-the-art, bespoke arena. The custom “Universe Arena,” imported from Portugal, rises to 16.5 meters and can hold over 70 tons of equipment. In addition, the building is treated to accommodate television filming and contains a stage and approximately 5,000 seats.

Senior members of the Miss Universe Organization were in Israel throughout October to tour the country and attend planning meetings. In addition, they met with the Mayor of Eilat, Eli Lankri, and closely supervised the infrastructure and construction work of the Miss Universe complex.

“The choice of Eilat will continue to strengthen its position as a leading international tourist city,” said Lankri. “Hundreds of millions of spectators around the globe will be able to enjoy the rare beauty of the city of Eilat and its spectacular sites.”

The contestants will arrive in Israel ahead of the competition to explore all the host country offers, beginning in Jerusalem and ending their trip in Eilat, where the competition will occur.

Using the Miss Universe platform, the December 12th production will highlight both the bold contestants of the past and the social and global issues they faced in their time.

“As a company that has the distinct advantage of bringing a global spotlight to world issues, I look forward to showcasing how our contestants can make a difference in their communities and around the world,” said Paula M. Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization. “I know that the city of Eilat will provide a great space for our contestants to learn and grow together.”

AKRON, Ohio, October 5, 2021 — On the heels of National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is opening a call for nominations for its 2020-2021 Highway Hero Award.

From now through December 31, 2021, you can nominate a professional truck driver who has acted selflessly for the good of others on the highways across North America.

“We designed the annual Goodyear Highway Hero Award decades ago to honor the heroic efforts of professional truck drivers who act as first responders on the highway,” said Gary Medalis, Goodyear’s director, Product Marketing. “These drivers are at the center of the trucking industry and are seldom recognized for their important role in keeping the global supply chain moving. The Goodyear Highway Hero Award is our way of shedding light on the merits of this profession and rewarding those who go above and beyond in their duty.”

To enter the Goodyear Highway Hero Award program, visit GoodyearTruckTires.com and tell the story of a driver you know who is deserving of the honor via the nomination form. The grand prize winner will be announced in early 2022 and will receive a package that includes a cash prize and a trip to Orlando for the Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) Annual Meeting & Transportation Technology Exhibition, which takes place March 8 - 11, 2022. In addition, two finalists will also receive a prize package.

While the program was formerly on pause due to COVID-19, the 2020-2021 Goodyear Highway Hero Award marks the 37th year Goodyear has celebrated truck drivers with the award. Past winners include a driver who ripped the back door from a burning car to save two passengers and a driver who dove into a pond to pull a child from a submerged car.

Nominations for this year’s program must meet the following criteria:

Goodyear is one of the world’s largest tire companies. It employs about 72,000 people and manufactures its products in 55 facilities in 23 countries around the world. Its two Innovation Centers in Akron, Ohio, and Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg, strive to develop state-of-the-art products and services that set the technology and performance standard for the industry.

PARIS, October 04, 2021 — On October 03, L’Oréal Paris stood up for women’s rights on the Runway, paying tribute to an empowered and inclusive vision of beauty. As an official partner of Paris Fashion Week, the brand hosted its 2021 public runway show open to all at the Parvis des Droits de l’Homme - a symbolic site in Paris where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was first adopted. The show’s theme was an ode to women’s empowerment and diversity in alignment with the brand’s global outreach program, “Stand Up Against Street Harassment,” which aims to educate the public on how to fight street harassment and to empower women to walk without fear. In the context of the 50th anniversary of L’Oréal Paris’ inspiring slogan, “Because I’m Worth It,” this bold approach resonated as a powerful statement about the individual value and as an expression of the brand’s commitment to supporting all women around the world.

Standing Up for Women’s Rights on the Runway

This year, “Le Défilé L’Oréal Paris” (The L’Oréal Paris Fashion Show) took a bold departure from the format of typical fashion shows, amplifying the brand’s central theme of self-worth, freedom of movement, and self-expression. Hosted at the Parvis des Droits de L’Homme (an esplanade at the foot of the Palais de Chaillot with a panorama view of the Eiffel tower where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was first adopted), the show transformed the historic space into the Parvis des droits de l’Homme et de la Femme (Square of Human and Women’s Rights). In addition, the company designed the empowered approach to align with and boost the brand’s global outreach program, “Stand Up Against Street Harassment,” established in 2020 and currently present in over 20 countries. L’Oréal Paris believes that women should walk without fear of harassment and feel their sense of worth.

A Cast of Empowered Global Spokespeople

Returning for its fourth edition since 2017, “Le Défilé L’Oréal Paris” (The L’Oréal Paris Fashion Show) is always an opportunity to unite the brand’s global spokespeople in Paris on the catwalk. This year, Katherine Langford, Yseult, Camille Razat, Nidhi Sunil, Jaha Dukureh, and Bebe Vio made their first appearances on behalf of the brand. In addition, timeless beauty Helen Mirren also returned to the Runway, bringing her signature confidence and charisma to the catwalk. Other returning spokespeople at Le Défilé included Aishwarya Rai, Camila Cabello, Amber Heard, Aja Naomi King, Liya Kebede, Cindy Bruna, Soo Joo Park, Luma Grothe, and Nikolaj Coster Waldau.

Inclusive Looks for All Women

In its direct-to-consumer approach, L’Oréal Paris shared how-to’s straight from the Runway. In-house global makeup director Val Garland and her team of artists created looks for women of all skin tones and ages. In contrast, international hair artist Stephane Lancien and his team crafted an array of unique hairstyles. For its fourth edition year, “Le Défilé L’Oréal Paris” embraced the synergy between beauty and fashion and shared it on a global scale.

The brand partners for the 2021 Le Défilé L’Oréal Paris were Alexandre Blanc, Ami, Azzaro, Balmain, Coperni, EgonLab, Elie Saab, Ester Manas, Giambattista Valli, Koché, La Fetiche, Mossi, Mugler, Nicola Lecourt Mansion, Olivier Theyskens, Pierre Hardy, Rokh, Uniforme, and Xuly Bët.
