World Intellectual Property Day: National Academy of Inventors announces 2022 Top 100 Worldwide University U.S. Utility Patent Holders.

TAMPA, Fla., April 26, 2023 — In celebration of “World Intellectual Property Day,” the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) has released its annual list of the Top 100 worldwide university U.S. utility patent holders. The Academy has released the rankings based on calendar year data provided by the United States Patent and Trademark Office since 2013.
Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office commented: “As we celebrate World IP Day, I am so pleased to see this evidence of the global impact of research and innovation conducted at academic institutions around the globe. On this special day, we at the USPTO pledge to do all we can to maintain a strong intellectual property system at home and worldwide.”
“Throughout its existence, the National Academy of Inventors has sought to quantify with hard data the vital role research and patented technology developed at academic institutions play in our society,” Dr. Paul Sanberg, President of the Academy, noted. “Nothing we do more clearly illustrates that point than this annual report. We will continue to seek other ways to reinforce that message. I will announce the next steps during our Annual Meeting in Washington DC, June 25-27.”
The National Academy of Inventors is a member organization comprising U.S. and international universities, and governmental and non-profit research institutes, with over 4,000 individual inventor members and Fellows spanning more than 250 institutions worldwide. It was founded in 2010 to recognize and encourage inventors with patents issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), enhance the visibility of academic technology and innovation, encourage the disclosure of intellectual property, educate and mentor innovative students, and translate the inventions of its members to benefit society.

MUMBAI, India, April 25, 2023 — To celebrate its 1st opening, Pret hosted the freshest breakfast in town before it opened its doors to customers on the Morning of April 21. It had over a hundred coffee lovers like actress Sara Ali Khan invited to enjoy their London breakfast right in the heart of Mumbai. NEW YORK, April 20, 2023 — H&M and Mugler celebrated their forthcoming collection launch with an immersive experience encompassing entertainment, music, performance, and fashion. The Mugler and H&M community’s friends, including Pamela Anderson, Charli XCX, Chloë Sevigny, Lourdes Leon, and Dominique Jackson, attended the event. They all wore pieces from the Mugler H&M collection.
The event featured a group concert by musicians Shygirl, Amaarae, and Eartheater, who all starred in the Mugler H&M music video. They were dressed in exclusive looks from the new collection. Each artist performed a series of their hits before uniting to serve a new version of the 90s club classic “Music Sounds Better With You,” a track specially commissioned in celebration of the Mugler H&M collection.
The performances were punctuated by a runway show, alongside dance performances and DJ sets by Bobby Beethoven, Goth Jafar, and Asmara at a subsequent after-party. The event was curated as a unique hybrid, bringing together sound, style, live performance, club culture, and dance, all while nodding to the theatricality and flamboyance that has been a signature of the house from its inception under Thierry Mugler through to its current incarnation under the direction of Casey Cadwallader. With over 800 guests in attendance, the event encapsulated the sense of diversity and inclusivity central to Mugler while underpinning the democratic ethos of the H&M designer collaborations.

UNESCO invites Governments to submit Nominations for the 2023 Prize for Girls' and Women's Education

Paris, France, April 21, 2023 — On International Women’s Day, UNESCO launched the call for nominations for the 2023 UNESCO Prize for Girls and Women’s Education. The Prize awards US$ 50,000 annually to two laureates making outstanding efforts in favor of girls and women’s education.
UNESCO said it believes in the transformative power of education to unlock the potential of women and girls, advance gender equality, and achieve just, equal, and inclusive societies.
So, UNESCO has invited the Governments of UNESCO Member States to nominate up to three individuals, institutions, or organizations who have made solid and innovative contributions in favor of girls’ and women’s education.
Interested candidates may contact their country’s National Commission for UNESCO or Permanent Delegation to UNESCO for nomination submission.
Nominations must meet the eligibility and selection criteria set by the Prize. In addition, nominated projects must be established and running for at least two years and show potential to be replicable and scalable. An independent International Jury of five experts will assess nominations based on the project’s potential for impact, innovation, and sustainability.
The submission deadline is May 19, 2023 (midnight, Paris time).
National Commissions for UNESCO and Permanent Delegations to UNESCO can submit the Nominations online in English or French on behalf of the candidates.
Based on the recommendations of the Jury, the Director-General of UNESCO will announce the 2023 laureates who will receive the award on October 11, 2023, as part of the “International Day of the Girl” celebrations.

LONDON, United Kingdom, Apr. 20, 2023: The world’s first facial recognition technology on a car has made its European debut at Salon Privé London today. Available exclusively on the all-electric Genesis GV60, Face Connect is part of a keyless biometric vehicle entry and engine start.
Genesis’ Face Connect allows drivers to access their car using their face alone - technology already available on millions of smartphones worldwide. Using a facial recognition sensor in the b-pillar of the vehicle with a deep-learning image processing controller, the GV60 can be locked and unlocked without needing a physical key.
Drivers need the physical key once to set up their profile for face recognition entry. Then the car is started using their fingerprint, with all information stored securely via encrypted software in the vehicle and managed via HMI (Human-Machine Interface). Drivers can be reassured that no biometric data is uploaded and stored remotely.
Making its debut in May last year, the GV60 was Genesis’ first all-electric car. With a range of up to 321 miles, at 0-62mph in just four seconds, and the ability to charge from 10-80% in just 18 minutes with the right conditions, the GV60 represents an unmatched level of premium design and technology.
Salon Privé London is held for three days in April in the heart of London, on the lawns of the historic Royal Hospital Chelsea, and is a spectacular collection of the greatest supercars, sports cars, and luxury cars. As well as the most prestigious brands on show, over 60 stunning classic vehicles will be lined up in the Concours de Vente - all available to buy there and then.
“This application of facial recognition and biometric technology on the Genesis GV60 is bringing not just Genesis but the entire industry into the next generation of motoring,” commented Andrew Pilkington, managing director of Genesis Motor UK. “Such state-of-the-art innovations simply demonstrate the commitment that Genesis has to its customers to offer a personalized and seamless experience and the commitment it has to the UK and European market.”
The 2023 Genesis GV60 is available in either Premium, Sport, or Sport Plus versions. In addition, it can be personalized using the online configurator, allowing customers to choose from a range of color and trim options and select a select number of upgrade packages.
Genesis brings premium cars with a luxury experience to Europe. The Korean brand has established itself as a genuine alternative within the premium segment, receiving multiple award wins in 2022.

Mumbai, April 18, 2023 — After a strong sales year in 2022, Porsche India is delivering on its promise to expand its retail network — the inauguration of five new facilities in one week is a keystone element in its strategic growth plan.
New Porsche showrooms in Bengaluru and Chennai and newly renovated and reopened sites in Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai were commemorated in back-to-back ceremonies during the week of 10 to April 15, 2023, to expand the existing network in India. The expansion brings the total number of Porsche showrooms to eight. In addition, there is a Porsche Studio in Delhi.
Dr. Manfred Bräunl, Chief Executive Officer of Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE, said the rollout is an example of the assurance made by Porsche India to exceed market expectations and deliver Porsche levels of customer experience to an expanding market.
Bräunl added, “India is an important market for Porsche. Porsche has been India’s fastest-growing automotive luxury brand over the last few years, making network development a priority.”
“The expansion of our Indian network underlines that customer centricity is at the core of our strategy for this market. The new showrooms intend to give visitors an immersive experience showcasing Porsche’s history and its engineering, safety, performance, connectivity, and efficiency innovations. These will set the theme for future locations across the sub-continent catering to a larger yet still niche market, including three new dealers appointed last year as the basis for its roadmap to future growth.
“Our Bengaluru and Chennai facilities are new from the ground up, while the Mumbai and Ahmedabad locations are major upgrades of existing facilities on their present sites,” Vujicic remarked. “Our new investor in Kolkata has taken the same location where the previous Porsche Centre used to stand many years back and completely overhauled it so that it’s now considered a new facility ready to be inaugurated.”
Porsche India enjoyed its best-ever sales performance in 2022, with a 64 percent growth over the previous year, as the all-new electric Taycan completed its first full year of sales. Buyer interest remained strong across its SUV and sports cars segments, with a 69 percent growth in the sales of SUV models highlighted by the top-selling Cayenne.

LONDON, April 18, 2023 — When it comes to the number of resident millionaires, cities in the USA and China dominate the World’s Top 10 Wealthiest Cities, while only one European city, namely London, makes it onto the 2023 list published today by international investment migration firm Henley & Partners in partnership with global wealth intelligence firm New World Wealth.
• Wealthiest Cities
New York City wears the crown as the wealthiest in the world with 340,000 millionaires, while two other American wealth hubs — the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles — come in 3rd and 6th places, with 285,000 and 205,400 resident high-net-worth individuals, respectively. (HNWIs have an investable wealth of over USD 1 million, and all figures are rounded to the nearest 100.)
Tokyo, which led the pack ten years ago, falls to 2nd place with 290,300 millionaires, and London, the wealthiest city in the world for many years, drops down to 4th place with 258,000 resident HNWIs. City-state Singapore, widely regarded as the most business-friendly city in the world and one of the top destinations for migrating millionaires, sits in 5th place with 240,100 resident millionaires. In comparison, Sydney comes in 10th place with 126,900 millionaires. Home to some of the world’s most exclusive residential suburbs, Sydney has experienced robust wealth growth over the past 20 years and is projected to break into the global Top 5 wealthiest cities by 2040.
China has three cities in the Top 10, with Hong Kong (129,500 millionaires), Beijing (128,200), and Shanghai (127,200) taking 7th, 8th, and 9th places, respectively. Beijing and Shanghai have climbed the rankings over the past decade, but Hong Kong has taken a tumble, dropping from 4th place in 2012 down to 7th place currently.
Dr. Juerg Steffen, CEO of Henley & Partners, says, “7 of the Top 10 wealthiest cities in the world are in countries that host formal investment migration programs and actively encourage foreign direct investment in return for residence or citizenship rights.”
• Fastest Growing Cities
The US and China also dominate the Top 10 list of “fastest-growing cities” for resident millionaires over the past decade. One of China’s most enduringly popular holiday spots, Hangzhou, tops the charts with a millionaire growth of 105% between 2012 and 2022. Shenzhen and the port city of Guangzhou also enjoyed significant HNWI expansion, at 98% and 86%, respectively. The three fastest-growing millionaire hotspots in the US are Austin (102% growth in resident HNWIs), West Palm Beach (90%), and Scottsdale (88%). India has two cities in the Top 10 — Bengaluru (88%) and Hyderabad (78%) — and the final two places go to the UAE’s cultural hub Sharjah (84%) and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam (82%) which is fast emerging as Asia’s next big wealth hub.
Head of Research at New World Wealth, Andrew Amoils, says traditional wealth magnets have experienced solid growth over the last decade. “Arguably the world’s top haven for the super-rich, the average wealth of a person living in Monaco exceeds USD 10 million, making it the top-ranked city on a wealth per capita basis. But unfortunately, it is also the world’s most expensive, with apartment prices exceeding USD 35,000 per square meter. Dubai is another leading international wealth center, with its low tax rates making it a magnet for migrating millionaires from all over the world. Approximately 3,500 high-net-worth individuals moved to the city in 2022 alone.”

Washington, DC, April 12, 2023 — The Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable (GSDR) met today and discussed debt sustainability and restructuring challenges and how to address them. At the end of the meeting, the International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, World Bank Group President David Malpass, and Indian Minister of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman, co-chairs of the GSDR, released the following statement.
“The Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable (GSDR) met today and discussed debt sustainability and restructuring challenges and ways to address them. We are grateful to all the participants, including Paris Club and non-Paris Club creditors, debtor countries, and private sector representatives. The discussion focused on the actions that can be taken now to accelerate debt restructuring processes and make them more efficient, including under the G20 Common Framework.
We agreed on the importance of urgently improving information sharing, including on macroeconomic projections and debt sustainability assessments, at an early stage of the process. Accordingly, the IMF and World Bank will rapidly issue staff guidance on information sharing at each step of the restructuring process.
The meeting discussed the role of Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) in these processes by providing net positive flows of concessional finance. In addition, the conference welcomed the International Development Association’s (IDA) provision of positive net flows and the ex-ante implicit debt relief through increased concessions and grants to countries facing higher risks of debt distress.
To clarify critical concepts to support the predictability and fairness of debt restructuring processes, a workshop will be organized in the following weeks on assessing and enforcing the comparability of treatment. Moreover, further work will be undertaken on principles regarding cut-off dates, formal debt service suspension at the beginning of the process, treatment of arrears, and perimeter of debt to be restructured, including concerning domestic debt. This work will also help in clarifying potential timetables to accelerate debt restructurings.
The IMF, World Bank, and the G20 Presidency will continue to work closely with other partners to support the international response to current debt challenges.”
Participants in the meeting included the three co-chairs (International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and India as G20 Presidency), official bilateral creditors (China, France as chair of the Paris Club, Japan, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom, United States), debtor countries (Ecuador, Ethiopia, Ghana, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Zambia), Brazil as the forthcoming 2024 G20 Presidency and private sector representatives (Institute of International Finance, International Capital Markets Association, BlackRock, Standard Chartered).

Ducati Lenovo Team ready to hit the track in Austin, Texas, for the Americas GP

Austin, Texas, April 12, 2023 — The Ducati Lenovo Team has arrived in Austin, Texas, to contest the third round of the 2023 MotoGP season, the Grand Prix of The Americas, at the famous Circuit of The Americas.
The U.S. track hosted the World Championship for the first time in 2013 and, with its over 5 kilometers, is one of the fascinating tracks on the calendar. Ducati has so far achieved seven podiums at COTA, most notably the victory scored by Enea Bastianini last year with the Desmosedici GP of the Gresini Racing team. However, the rider from Rimini, still recovering from a right shoulder injury suffered in the Portuguese GP, will not participate in the American event this year and will be replaced by Michele Pirro, the official test rider for the Borgo Panigale manufacturer.
2022 World Champion Francesco Bagnaia arrives in the United States determined to redeem himself after crashing in Argentina in second position and finishing the race sixteenth. Bagnaia currently boasts a third place as his best result in Austin, achieved in 2021 after starting from the pole.

IMF announces World Economic Outlook April 2023
Washington DC, April 11, 2023 — In its World Economic Outlook’s press briefing, the IMF (International Monetary Fund) announced today that the baseline forecast for global output growth is 0.1 percentage points lower than that predicted in the January 2023 WEO Update. It would rise to 3.0 percent in 2024.
“The world economy is still recovering from the unprecedented upheavals of the last three years, and the recent banking turmoil has increased uncertainties. As a result, we expect global output growth to fall from 3.4% last year to 2.8% in 2023 before rising to 3% in 2024, mostly unchanged from our January projections. Advanced economies would see an especially pronounced growth slowdown from 2.7% in 2022 to 1.3% in 2023. Global headline inflation is set to fall from 8.7% in 2022 to 7% in 2023 due to lower commodity prices, but underlying core inflation is proving to be stickier. Importantly, this outlook assumes that recent financial stresses remain contained,” said Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, the IMF’s Chief Economist.
Much uncertainty clouds the short- and medium-term outlook as the global economy adjusts to the shocks of 2020-22 and the recent financial sector turmoil. As a result, recession concerns have gained prominence, while worries about stubbornly high inflation persist.
“Once again, risks are heavily tilted to the downside. They have risen with the recent financial turmoil. Most prominently, recent banking system turbulence could result in a sharper and more persistent tightening of global financial conditions. The simultaneous rate hikes across countries could have more contractionary effects than expected, especially as debt levels are at historical highs. There might be a need for more monetary tightening if inflation remains stickier than expected. These risks and more could all materialize at a time when policymakers face much more limited policy space to offset negative shocks, especially in low-income countries,” added Gourinchas.
With the fog around current and prospective economic conditions thickening, policymakers have a narrow path toward restoring price stability while avoiding a recession and maintaining financial stability. However, achieving strong, sustainable, and inclusive growth will require policymakers to stay agile and be ready to adjust as information becomes available.
“First, as long as financial stress is not systemic as it is now, the fight against inflation should remain the priority for central banks. Second, central banks should use separate tools to safeguard financial stability and clearly communicate their objectives to avoid unwarranted volatility. Further, financial policies should remain laser-focused on preserving financial stability and watch for any buildup of risks in banks, non-banks, and the real estate sectors. Third, in many countries, fiscal policy should tighten to ease inflation pressures, restore debt sustainability, and rebuild fiscal buffers. Finally, in the event of capital outflows that raise financial stability risks, emerging market and developing economies should use the integrated Policy framework, combining temporary targeted foreign exchange interventions and capital flow measures where appropriate,” said Gourinchas.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) lowered India’s economic growth projection for the current fiscal to 5.9 percent from 6.1 percent earlier. Yet India will continue to be the fastest-growing economy in the world.

Washington, DC, April 08, 2023 — The IMF is preparing to host thousands of delegates and media at the 2023 Spring Meetings in Washington, DC.
In her Spring Meetings Curtain Raiser speech, the Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, said that despite surprisingly resilient labor markets, strong consumer demand, and the uplift in China, the world economy might grow less than 3% this year. However, to brighten growth prospects, three themes that need to be addressed are fighting inflation and safeguarding financial stability, improving medium-term opportunities for growth, and fostering solidarity to reduce global disparities.
“Central banks should continue to use interest rates to fight inflation while using financial policies to ensure financial stability,” said Georgieva, speaking to a packed room of diplomats at Meridian International Center in Washington.
On fostering solidarity to reduce global disparities, Georgieva said that the IMF had provided nearly $300 billion in new financing for 96 countries since the start of the Covid pandemic.
The IMF and World Bank will jointly host the meetings of the world’s finance ministers, central bankers, civil society organizations, parliamentarians, and nearly 600 journalists.
The 2023 Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group (WBG) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will occur from Monday, April 10 to Sunday, April 16, in the WBG and IMF headquarters in Washington, DC.

New Delhi, April 09, 2023 — Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs, Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman, will be embarking on an official visit to the USA beginning April 10, 2023. During the visit, Smt. Sitharaman will attend the 2023 Spring World Bank Group (WBG) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) meetings. In addition, she will also participate in the G20, Investor, and Bilateral meetings scheduled from April 10 to April 16, 2023, in the WBG and IMF Headquarters in Washington, DC.

- Around 350 delegates from G20 members, 13 invitee countries, and various international and regional organizations will participate in multilateral discussions around a broad spectrum of pressing global issues.

- Global Economy and International Financial Architecture;
- Sustainable Finance, Financial Sector, and Financial Inclusion;

These sessions will focus on issues such as addressing food & energy insecurity, managing global debt vulnerabilities, strengthening Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), mobilizing finance for climate action, advancing financial inclusion, and accelerating progress on International Tax and Financial Sector issues. In addition, the meeting will take stock of the progress made on outcomes envisaged under India’s G20 Finance Track agenda.
On the sidelines of the Spring Annual Meetings, the Finance Minister will have bilateral engagements with her counterparts from G20 countries and Heads of other delegations, including major international organizations, to discuss issues and areas of mutual interest and cooperation under India’s G20 Presidency.
During her visit, the Union Finance Minister will also participate in a fireside chat at the Peterson Institute of International Economics (PIIE) on April 10, 2023.
In a high-level meeting on April 11, 2023, the Finance Minister will meet the US Treasury Secretary, Ms. Janet Yellen, to discuss issues of mutual interest.
India, International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank will co-chair a meeting of the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable on April 12, 2023, to discuss the current global debt landscape and ways to address existing challenges in debt restructuring. On April 14, 2023, a high-level seminar on “Macro-financial implications of Crypto assets” will be held to review the macro-financial implications of Crypto Assets and discuss policies to leverage benefits and contain risks. Smt. Sitharaman will also meet the G20 Expert Group on strengthening Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) on April 15, 2023, to discuss the need for an updated MDBs ecosystem for the 21st century towards financing sustainable development goals and transboundary challenges.
Besides these, the Finance Minister will also participate in a high-level Seminar on ‘Stacking up the benefits of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)’ organized by the IMF on April 14, 2023. The Seminar aims to discuss lessons from India and other countries on the transformational power of DPI and ways to maximize its potential.

UNESCO IIEP announces MartÃn Benavides, former Minister of Education of Peru, as its new Director

Paris, France, April 07, 2023 — The UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP) has welcomed MartÃn Benavides as its new Director.
Benavides is a Peruvian sociologist who served as the Minister of Education from February 2020 to November 2020. In this role, he designed the country’s national strategy for distance education while overseeing all levels of the education system, from pre-primary to higher education.
As IIEP Director, Benavides will provide strategic leadership for the Institute, celebrating six decades of supporting UNESCO Member States in planning and managing their education systems in 2023.
In his new role, Benavides will oversee IIEP’s capacity development offer, which includes technical cooperation for countries, a dynamic, multi-lingual training offer, and knowledge production and mobilization through its three offices in Buenos Aires, Dakar, and Paris.
“I look forward to analyzing what constitutes planning today - we know it goes beyond policy design, implementation, or evaluation. So, we will reflect on this and present new ideas for educational planning to our partners and governments. This is crucial for addressing the challenges of the post-COVID-19 era,” said Benavides.
“On behalf of the IIEP Board, I am thrilled to welcome Dr. MartÃn Benavides during this transformational time for education,” said IIEP Governing Board Chair José Weinstein. “As a former Peruvian Minister of Education and sociologist, he brings not only a wealth of knowledge to the role, but the leadership and vision to further IIEP in its important mission of developing the capacities of education actors worldwide,” Weinstein said.
Before joining IIEP in March 2023, Benavides served as Director of the Observatory of Higher Education, and from 2018, he was a senior professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (Lima). Earlier in his career, in 2002, Benavides joined the Peruvian think tank Group for the Analysis of Development (GRADE), where he was first a senior researcher and then Executive Director from 2008 to 2018.
From 2015 to 2018, Benavides was a member of the Board of Directors of Peru’s National Superintendence of Higher University Education (SUNEDU). From 2018 to 2020, he served as superintendent of this body and led the implementation of the country’s university reform.
Benavides, who holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Policy and a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University, has published extensively on the sociology of education, educational policy, as well as issues related to social stratification, social classes, inequality, and youth. He has also been a visiting researcher and fellow at the Population and Development Center (Ceped) at the Université de Paris and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford University.
The UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning is an arm of UNESCO created in 1963 in Paris, France. It develops the capacities of education actors to plan and manage their education systems through training, technical assistance, policy research, and knowledge-sharing programs.
It issues country-specific information for use by local educational administrations. For example, the report “Funding Mechanism of Thrust Areas of Higher Education in India” is jointly published by UNESCO IIEP and UGC (University Grants Commission), India.
