Paris, France, May 30, 2023 — In response to the rapid emergence of new and powerful generative AI tools, UNESCO convened the first global gathering of Education Ministers to discuss the immediate and long-term potential, difficulties and hazards AI applications pose to education systems. Over 40 Ministers gathered to exchange policy approaches and plans for integrating these tools into education. UNESCO proposed a roadmap on generative AI and education, including open multistakeholder collaboration, during the online discussion on May 25, 2023.

“Generative AI expands educational horizons and challenges.” However, we must act quickly to ensure that future AI technologies are integrated into education on our terms. “It is our responsibility to prioritize safety, inclusion, diversity, transparency, and quality — as stated in the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, which our Member States unanimously adopted,” said Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education.

• Ministers highlighted several Pressing Challenges and shared Policy Approaches

Several common concerns emerged during the discussion, including how to adapt education systems to the disruptions that generative AI is causing, how to integrate generative AI into curricula, teaching methods, and examinations, and how to mitigate the inherent flaws of these technologies, such as the ability to make glaring errors and produce biassed information.

The ministerial debate highlighted that governments worldwide are building or refining appropriate policy responses in this fast-emerging context, including developing or refining national AI, data protection, and other regulatory frameworks.

• Only 10% of Schools and Universities have Formal Guidance on AI

According to a new UNESCO global study of over 450 schools and institutions, less than 10% have produced institutional rules and detailed advice on using generative AI applications. The findings show that institutions face difficulties in responding quickly to the sudden appearance of these powerful, productive AI apps capable of producing written and visual creations.

The importance of teachers as learning facilitators in this new era was emphasized. However, to handle these obstacles, teachers require guidance and training.

• UNESCO’s Policy Guidelines and Competencies Framework

UNESCO will continue to lead the global conversation with policymakers, EdTech partners, academia, and civil society. The Organisation is establishing policy guidelines for using generative AI in education and research and AI competency frameworks for students and teachers in school. These will be unveiled at the Digital Learning Week, held at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris from September 4 to 7, 2023.

Through its mandates for education and science, UNESCO has unique competence. In recent years, the Organisation has led a global study on the Future of Education, and it has also produced the first global normative framework for the ethics of artificial intelligence, which its 193 Member States unanimously endorsed in November 2021.

• UNESCO’s Work in AI in Education

UNESCO is aiding its Member States in realizing the potential of AI technology in their respective fields of competence. The UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of AI, adopted in 2021, establishes the proper normative foundation. In education, the Organisation has mobilized stakeholders around the Beijing Consensus on Artificial Intelligence and Education and has produced several guidelines, including AI and Education: A Guide for Policymakers.

India's Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Dr. L Murugan, to lead a delegation to Cannes Film Festival from 16th to 27th May

Cannes Film Festival

New Delhi, India, May 14, 2023 — Dr. L. Murugan, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, will lead the Indian Delegation to Cannes International Film Festival this year. Dr. Murugan will proudly walk the red carpet in traditional Tamil attire, ‘Veshti,’ on Cannes’ inaugural day, showcasing the rich Indian Culture. Accompanying him on the red carpet will be renowned filmmaker Ms. Guneet Monga of The Elephant Whisperers fame; Ms. Manushi Chillar, Indian actress, model, and the winner of the Miss World 2017; Ms. Esha Gupta, actress, and Kangabam Tomba, Manipuri actor. It’s a true honor for India to be represented by such a distinguished group at this prestigious event.

The India Pavilion, with the theme “Showcasing India’s Creative Economy,” was designed by the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad to present India’s global community. The pavilion’s design was inspired by the Saraswati Yantra, an abstract representation of the goddess Saraswati, who represents knowledge, music, art, speech, wisdom, and learning. Drawing inspiration from India’s national flag colors, the pavilion’s colors include saffron, white, green, and blue. Saffron represents the country’s strength and courage, white symbolizes inner peace and truth, green represents fertility, growth, and auspiciousness of the land, and blue represents the law of dharma and truth. India has abundant talent, and the Indian Pavilion will provide a platform for the Indian Film community to sign distribution deals, greenlight scripts, crack production collaborations, and network with the world’s leading entertainment and media players.

It’s exciting news that four Indian films have been selected to be a part of the official lineup at the Cannes Film Festival. Kanu Behl’s Agra is set to have its world premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight, making it his second film to debut at Cannes after Titli in 2014, which was shown in the ‘Un Certain Regard section. Anurag Kashyap’s Kennedy will also be featured in Midnight Screenings and “Nehemich” in the La Cinef section of the Festival de Cannes. Additionally, several other Indian films will be screened in Marche du Films. Finally, the ‘Classics’ section will showcase a restored Manipuri film, ‘Ishanhou.’

During the Festival, India Pavilion has arranged various interactive sessions to promote India’s film industry and foster international partnerships. These sessions include showcasing India as a prime filming destination and co-production partner, collaborating with international film commissions, facilitating distribution collaboration between nations, engaging with key film markets and festivals worldwide, and highlighting the significant contribution of women in cinema beyond just employment.

The Cannes Film Festival has always held a special place for India and France, serving as a coveted platform for cultural exchange. India was honored as the Country of Honor at the Marche du Cannes last year, and now the success of Indian films at the Oscars, including RRR’s “Naatu Naatu” and The Elephant Whisperers’ Oscar win in the Best Documentary Short Category, demonstrates the expanding global appeal of Indian storytelling.

VIENNA, May 10, 2023 — “The average week typically sees us spending more time interacting at work with co-workers than with family and friends, so when it comes to showing kindness and gratitude, what better place to start than at work,” says premium coffee roaster Julius Meinl.

In a global study of 4,000 adults across Europe, Julius Meinl found that two in three people agree that ‘thank you’ isn’t enough in the workplace.

Over half said bosses expect an excellent job done all the time, while 40% cited “time pressures” as one of the main reasons a ‘thanks’ often goes amiss at work.

But, building a culture of gratitude at work has benefits to both those expressing and receiving thanks. For example, 81% agreed that hearing ‘thank you’ from their boss positively impacted their day, while three-fifths said it made them feel appreciated. Just under half said it motivated them to work harder.

Christina Menil, official spokesperson for the Julius Meinl ‘Say Thank You’ campaign, said: “Our research highlights how seemingly small gestures such as taking someone for a coffee can make a real impact. It shows the importance of taking time to show appreciation to loved ones and also work colleagues. After all, we spend so much time with them - building strong relationships at work makes a good team and can benefit everyone involved. Our team philosophy at Julius Meinl is to create meaningful moments in each other’s lives, and that’s exactly what our ‘Say Thank You’ initiative aims to do with every cup of coffee served. Vienna’s coffee house culture is about taking time and enjoying the charming little moments in life, so this initiative is how we bring this to the world.”

Julius Meinl aims to inspire more ‘thank yous’ and moments of kindness with their premium coffee. For every coffee ordered at participating outlets, coffee lovers will receive a voucher to Say Thank You to someone of their choosing, whether a colleague or loved one, with the gift of a complimentary cup of Julius Meinl coffee.

The Julius Meinl ‘Say Thank You’ initiative has successfully inspired more than 250,000 ‘thank yous’ in more than 20 countries across the globe and will be launching for a second year at participating outlets from May 15, 2023.

I have held many roles where I have worked with clients, models, and celebrities, but my favorite is always helping the woman who forgot about herself because she was too busy helping everyone else. I love making her comfortable and teaching her to feel beautiful, and through the L’Oréal Paris League of Experts, I will reach so many more women to share this message.”

Allan, Claudia, and Erica officially joined the brand today. This initial group of talent will work in several upcoming brand activations, including the Cannes Film Festival.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars at Stanford University announces 2023 Cohort of New Scholars.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars will include 85 new scholars in its sixth cohort, representing 29 countries and 38 graduate degree programs across Stanford University.

Stanford University

STANFORD, Calif., May 9, 2023 — Knight-Hennessy Scholars at Stanford University announced its 2023 cohort of 85 new scholars, the largest to date. The new cohort comprises students from 29 countries who will pursue degrees in 38 graduate programs across all seven graduate schools at Stanford. In addition, for the first time, the cohort includes scholars from Hungary, Malawi, the Netherlands, Russia, Sierra Leone, and Turkey.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars is a multidisciplinary, multicultural graduate scholarship program. Knight-Hennessy scholars receive up to three years of financial support to pursue graduate studies at Stanford while engaging in experiences that prepare them to be visionary, courageous, and collaborative leaders who address the world’s complex challenges. Scholars are selected based on their demonstration of the independence of thought, purposeful leadership, and a civic mindset; they span all seven schools at Stanford across all departments.

“In a world that continues to grow more complex, Knight-Hennessy scholars are building the knowledge, skills, and community needed to address our biggest challenges, from climate change to immigration to equity in health care and education — and so much more,” said John L. Hennessy, Stanford University president emeritus and the Shriram Family Director of Knight-Hennessy Scholars. “I believe these scholars will help build a better future for all of us.”

Knight-Hennessy Scholars develops emerging leaders who commit to the greater good and the tools needed to drive meaningful change. The King Global Leadership Program is a core part of the Knight-Hennessy Scholars experience. It offers various workshops, lectures, projects, and experiences that complement scholars’ graduate school education, helping them reach their leadership objectives.

Among the 2023 scholars, 51 percent are female, and 41 percent hold a passport from a foreign country. Sixty-three percent of U.S. scholars identify as a person of color, and 8 percent have served in the U.S. military. The scholars earned undergraduate degrees at 17 international and 38 U.S. institutions. Nineteen percent are the first in their family to graduate from college. The sixth cohort brings the total scholar count to 425, beginning with the inaugural cohort enrolled in 2018.

“I am inspired by our scholars daily,” said Tina Seelig, executive director of Knight-Hennessy Scholars. “Their diversity is our strength. During their time with us, K.H. scholars build an incredible community that expands their world and potential for impact. I’m so excited to welcome our 2023 cohort.”

Knight-Hennessy Scholars has no quotas or restrictions based on region, college or university, field of study, or career aspiration.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars received 7,119 total applications this year, an increase of 5 percent from last year’s 6,742 applications.

Announced in 2016, Knight-Hennessy Scholars gets its name from Phil Knight, philanthropist and co-founder of Nike Inc., and John Hennessy, chairman of Alphabet Inc. Knight-Hennessy Scholars is the largest fully endowed graduate fellowship in the world.

Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, May 04, 2023 — Pecco Bagnaia took another extraordinary victory in the MotoGP Spanish GP this afternoon at the Circuito de Jerez - Angel Nieto. The Ducati Lenovo Team rider did an impeccable race at the Andalusian track, which led him to score his thirteenth success in MotoGP and his second of the season.

As in yesterday’s Sprint race, today’s GP was interrupted shortly after the start due to a crash and restarted after a few minutes. Starting with the fifth fastest time, Pecco moved up to third immediately and overtook Jack Miller (KTM Factory Racing). But then he had to give up his position to the Australian rider due to a questionable race direction decision that deemed his overtaking maneuver unfair, even though there was no contact between the two riders.

However, Bagnaia maintained concentration and managed to catch Miller again, reducing the gap to Brad Binder. With a few laps to go, the rider from Chivasso caught up with the South African rider, passing him with five laps to go. Thanks to today’s success, Bagnaia returns to the top of the overall standings with a 22-point lead over fellow Ducati rider Bezzecchi (VR46 Racing Team). Ducati remains at the top of the constructors’ standings, while the Ducati Lenovo Team is fourth in the teams’ standings.

U.S. Postal Service Issues U.S. Flag Stamp

FREEDOM, Maine, May 03, 2023 — With the 2023 U.S. Flag stamp, the U.S. Postal Service honors an important symbol of its nation. The flag serves as a visual reminder of the array of freedoms that Americans enjoy. This stamp displays the banner in its full glory, seven red and six white bars straight and true, with 50 white stars sharply defined on a blue field.

The flag’s design dates to 1777, when the Continental Congress specified 13 horizontal stripes and 13 stars to honor the 13 original colonies. Various versions of the early flag continued to be used until, in 1818, the U.S. Congress standardized the design, mandating 13 stripes forever but a star for every state.

In the mid-1950s, anticipating statehood for Alaska and Hawaii, President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed a committee to create designs for two new flags. The last time the flag’s design changed was July 4, 1960, with the entrance of Hawaii into the United States the previous August.

The U.S. Flag Forever stamp will be sold in booklets and panes of 20 and coils of 100, 3,000, and 10,000. Providing a solid foundation for the flag is the word FREEDOM.

Antonio Alcalá, an art director for USPS, designed the stamp with existing art by Hong Li.
