New Delhi, June 26, 2023 — Ahmedabad will host the Urban20 (U20) Mayoral Summit on July 7-8, 2023. The summit will bring together mayors, city leaders from G20 nations, and delegates representing various organizations and dignitaries from the Indian and State Governments.

U20 is an Engagement Group under India’s G20 presidency, emphasizing the role of cities in achieving sustainable development through collaboration.

Ahmedabad is the U20 Chair for the current cycle, with the National Institute of Urban Affairs and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs supporting.

At the U20 City Sherpa meeting in February 2023, six priority areas were deliberated and finalized for inclusion in the U20 Communiqué. These priorities include environmentally responsible behaviors, climate finance, water security, digital urban futures, urban governance, planning frameworks, and local culture and economy. The upcoming Mayoral Summit will feature four thematic sessions focusing on these priorities, with over 20 mayors from around the world and 25 from Indian cities sharing their experiences and releasing six white papers.

Other events at the summit include spotlight sessions on urban resilience, city readiness for investments, inclusion, circular economy, and data-driven governance, an exhibition showcasing India’s urban successes, and a screening of select films on climate change.

Participating Mayors and delegates will also go on city excursions, visit historical monuments and the Sabarmati Ashram, and experience Gujarat and India’s cultural heritage. The U20 Communiqué, an action-oriented document prepared collaboratively by attending Mayors, will be handed over to G20 leaders.

IMF Managing Director emphasizes the need for mutual support and cooperation in a rapidly changing, tense world at the Paris Summit Closing Press Conference.

Paris, June 24, 2023 — During the Paris Summit Closing Press Conference, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva stressed the urgent need for mutual support in the ever-changing world. Unfortunately, she said, we face more frequent and severe shocks, which leads to heightened tensions.

“While our economy has shown resilience in the face of challenges such as COVID and war, it has come at a cost. Interest rates have risen, debt burdens are growing, and living costs are high. Unfortunately, poverty and inequality are also on the rise.”

“The climate crisis is upon us and disproportionately affects poor and vulnerable countries that have contributed the least to the problem.”

“We must act decisively to address these issues. To do so, we need strong leadership.”

“I support the call to reduce the debt burden on countries that experience exogenous shocks,” the IMF MD said.

“The Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable is a positive step that combines traditional Paris Club creditors and non-Paris Club creditors such as China, India, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, the private sector, and debtor countries. She remarked that we must address the correlation between debt and climate and work on debt-for-climate swaps.”

“The IMF has integrated climate considerations into all our work, recognizing that climate is macro-critical. We advocate for carbon pricing to meet the 1.5 degrees Celsius target by 2030. We propose a fair carbon price floor where poorer countries pay less, middle-income countries pay more, and rich countries pay the highest price. There is progress towards this goal, with carbon pricing now covering around 25% of global emissions. We still have a long way to go, but where there is a will, there is a way,” the IMF Chief stated.

Ms. Georgieva said that Financing is a crucial topic for the IMF. “We recently introduced a new instrument called the Resilience and Sustainability Trust, offering long-term, affordable Financing with a 20-year repayment period and a 10-and-a-half-year grace period, a first in IMF history.”

“We fulfilled our 2021 pledge of US$100 billion in SDR channeling, with approximately US$60 billion already in use in the Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust and the Resilience and Sustainability Trust. This funding has made a significant difference.”

“As I reflect on my time at the IMF, I recall visiting the hotel in Bretton Woods where it all began, with only 44 countries and all-male delegations, most arriving by boat. Today, the world has more than doubled in the number of countries and more than tripled in population, with global GDP increasing more than tenfold. We must adapt to these changes and commit to a more inclusive, representative, and well-resourced future. As a dedicated and empathetic assistant, I am committed to serving our members with the utmost professionalism and look forward to continuing our work together,” Kristalina Georgieva concluded.

The summit in Paris on June 22-23 brought together heads of state, financial institutions, and members of civil society to address inequality, climate change, and biodiversity. The aim was to reform the international monetary system and create a fairer, more sustainable future. Roundtable discussions focused on debt solutions, green infrastructure, and climate finance. The summit established principles for future financial reforms and created a more balanced financial partnership between the North and South. The main goal was to reduce the climate, economic, and technological gaps that divide the world and build prosperity and security for every country.

The summit took place at three Paris venues: the Palais Brongniart, UNESCO, and the OECD.

Paris, June 12, 2023 - UNESCO’s Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, announced today that the United States of America had officially notified her of its intent to rejoin the organization in July. This decision follows USA’s concrete financing plan welcomed by UNESCO representatives from 193 member countries.

In a letter to the Director-General, the U.S. Department of State expressed satisfaction with UNESCO’s modernized management and reduced political tensions in recent years. UNESCO’s initiatives have enabled the organization to reconnect with its historical ambitions. These initiatives include tackling contemporary challenges such as the ethics of artificial intelligence and ocean protection. Additionally, administrative reforms implemented since 2018 have made UNESCO more efficient and financially sound.

The return of the United States to UNESCO was made possible by a congressional agreement in December 2022 authorizing financial contributions to the organization. The U.S. suspended its contributions in 2011 due to domestic legislation before notifying UNESCO of its decision to withdraw legally on October 12, 2017.

The UNESCO Administration must now submit the proposed financing plan to the UNESCO Member States General Conference for approval. Certain Member States have requested that an extraordinary session be held soon for a taking a decision.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay remarked that the United States’ decision to rejoin the organization is a vital act of confidence in UNESCO, its multilateralism, and the centrality of its mandate in culture, education, science, and information.

Washington, DC, June 02, 2023 — India’s Congress leader Rahul Gandhi emphasized the significance of Indian democracy as a global public good, stating that its downfall would impact India and the World, including America’s national interest.

However, he also acknowledged that the issue of democracy is an internal matter of India, and he is committed to fighting against any suppression of democratic values in the country.

During a Thursday news conference at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, Gandhi spoke about India’s strengths, including its highly educated and technically skilled population and democratic values.

He also stressed the need for an alternative vision and the core elements of that vision to face the challenge of transitioning in mobility, energy, and communication. Additionally, while cooperation on defense is crucial, expanding the relationship between India and the United States is equally important to enhance security, Gandhi asserted.

India's Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Dr. L Murugan, to lead a delegation to Cannes Film Festival from 16th to 27th May

Cannes Film Festival

New Delhi, India, May 14, 2023 — Dr. L. Murugan, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, will lead the Indian Delegation to Cannes International Film Festival this year. Dr. Murugan will proudly walk the red carpet in traditional Tamil attire, ‘Veshti,’ on Cannes’ inaugural day, showcasing the rich Indian Culture. Accompanying him on the red carpet will be renowned filmmaker Ms. Guneet Monga of The Elephant Whisperers fame; Ms. Manushi Chillar, Indian actress, model, and the winner of the Miss World 2017; Ms. Esha Gupta, actress, and Kangabam Tomba, Manipuri actor. It’s a true honor for India to be represented by such a distinguished group at this prestigious event.

The India Pavilion, with the theme “Showcasing India’s Creative Economy,” was designed by the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad to present India’s global community. The pavilion’s design was inspired by the Saraswati Yantra, an abstract representation of the goddess Saraswati, who represents knowledge, music, art, speech, wisdom, and learning. Drawing inspiration from India’s national flag colors, the pavilion’s colors include saffron, white, green, and blue. Saffron represents the country’s strength and courage, white symbolizes inner peace and truth, green represents fertility, growth, and auspiciousness of the land, and blue represents the law of dharma and truth. India has abundant talent, and the Indian Pavilion will provide a platform for the Indian Film community to sign distribution deals, greenlight scripts, crack production collaborations, and network with the world’s leading entertainment and media players.

It’s exciting news that four Indian films have been selected to be a part of the official lineup at the Cannes Film Festival. Kanu Behl’s Agra is set to have its world premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight, making it his second film to debut at Cannes after Titli in 2014, which was shown in the ‘Un Certain Regard section. Anurag Kashyap’s Kennedy will also be featured in Midnight Screenings and “Nehemich” in the La Cinef section of the Festival de Cannes. Additionally, several other Indian films will be screened in Marche du Films. Finally, the ‘Classics’ section will showcase a restored Manipuri film, ‘Ishanhou.’

During the Festival, India Pavilion has arranged various interactive sessions to promote India’s film industry and foster international partnerships. These sessions include showcasing India as a prime filming destination and co-production partner, collaborating with international film commissions, facilitating distribution collaboration between nations, engaging with key film markets and festivals worldwide, and highlighting the significant contribution of women in cinema beyond just employment.

The Cannes Film Festival has always held a special place for India and France, serving as a coveted platform for cultural exchange. India was honored as the Country of Honor at the Marche du Cannes last year, and now the success of Indian films at the Oscars, including RRR’s “Naatu Naatu” and The Elephant Whisperers’ Oscar win in the Best Documentary Short Category, demonstrates the expanding global appeal of Indian storytelling.
